Peter O'Toole and Julie Christie were to play the parts of Norman and Madge but were later replaced by Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie. Additionally director John Madden went on to say that Eileen Atkins and John Hurt were another two actors considered for parts.

At one point Madge claims to be Princess Margaret. Ramona Marquez, who plays Madge's granddaughter, actually played Princess Margaret in The King's Speech (2010).
