Tom Wilkinson (Graham Dashwood) is married to Diana Hardcastle (Carol) in real life.
Jean reads Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach, on whose novel These Foolish Things the film is based. Tulip Fever (2017) was filmed a few years later.
Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton previously played husband and wife in Shaun of the Dead (2004)
At one point Madge claims to be Princess Margaret. Ramona Marquez, who plays Madge's granddaughter, played Princess Margaret as a child in The King's Speech (2010).

Peter O'Toole and Julie Christie were to play the parts of Norman and Madge but were later replaced by Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie. Additionally director John Madden went on to say that Eileen Atkins and John Hurt were another two actors considered for parts.

Evelyn's voiceover at the end of the film: 'Someone once said "Everything will be alright in the end. And if it's not alright, then trust me, it's not yet the end." The someone is Bollywood mega-star 'Shahrukh Khan'. In his movie Om Shanti Om (2007) he says "Life is like a film, it always has a happy ending and if it's not happy then it's not the end." Evelyn's voiceover is a paraphrase of this quote.
