Why Jinder Mahal as WWE Champion is bad for Smackdown… – WWE Backlash 2017 review

Shinsuke Nakamura beat Dolph Ziggler

WWE surprisingly opened the show with what could’ve been the night’s main event – Dolph Ziggler vs Shinsuke Nakamura. Tom Phillips asked early on in the match: “which man will suffer most for their art?”

That artist stuff ain’t going anywhere.

The two had a good 15 minute match, with Nakamura kicking out of the Zigzag and a brutal looking kick to the back of the head. But really, is a drawn-out, competitive opener really what you want for Nakamura’s debut fight? Considering the five-week-or-so build, that Shinsuke was all over the poster and how much his in-ring skill has been teased, this should’ve been a dominating 5 minute win for Nakamura. Instead, both men come out of this at exactly the same level they started.

Liam Hoofe reviews WWE Backlash

On Saturday night the WWE delivered Nxt: Chicago, which was one of the finest events the company have blessed us with in a long time [read my review here].

Featuring a serious match of the year candidate, some awesome in-ring work and an expertly executed shock of a finish, Takeover: Chicago will likely be the best show of 2017. 24 hours later SmackDown Live delivered their first post-Mania PPV – could the blue brand, and the main roster, live up to the standard set on Saturday by Nxt? Let’s break down each match, and find out.

Shinsuke Nakamura Defeated Dolph Ziggler

How over is Shinsuke? The audience reaction to his entrance is one of the best I’ve seen for a debuting superstar in a long time. Any fears of whether he would be accepted by the mainstream WWE audience have been thrown straight out of the window.

WWE Backlash: The Five Best Matches in the Event’s History

19 May 2017 10:15 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In preparation for this Sunday’s event, Liam Hoofe takes a look back at the best matches in the history of WWE Backlash

The return of WWE Backlash last year was met with an enthusiastic response from the WWE Universe, and with good reason. The PPV, which traditionally followed on from WrestleMania, has given us some great shows since its birth in 1999. The PPV itself would often be a better wrestling event than WrestleMania in fact, with it effectively being a re-run of the card with all of the pomp and spectacle removed.

Needless to say, the show has given us many great matches and moments over the years as well. So to get you warmed up for this Sunday’s upcoming event, here is a look back at some of the best matches from the PPV’s history, and no, Shawn Michaels and God Vs The McMahons didn’t make the list. »

Oli Davis rounds up the biggest professional wrestling news in his daily WrestleTalk column…

Despite his WWE return being reported as “sooner rather than later” leading up to Wrestlemania weekend, his daughter leaking that the two sides had been in talks, and him only being an hour’s drive from the event on the day, Hulk Hogan did not show up at Vince McMahon’s biggest show of the year.

It’s now been two years since WWE cut all ties with the Hulkster when audio of him using racial slurs was made public during Hogan’s sex tape scandal with Gawker, and an inevitable return to the company now might be even further in the future.

The Hulkster’s best friend forever – and business partner – Jimmy Hart recently spoke on the radio about their upcoming plans. While he answered the usual WWE return question with the usual response “never »

National Beat Up John Cena Day is often attributed to Aj Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. But really, the year’s best holiday was actually founded by Kevin Owens on his main roster debut – which Ko celebrated yesterday with an anniversary tweet:

On this day 2 years ago, I showed up on #Raw to assault my child's hero on national television.

Happy Anniversary @JohnCena! @WWE

Kevin Owens (@FightOwensFight) May 18, 2017

Owens is such a good dad. It’s a significant moment in anyone’s childhood, when their father rips apart their beloved icons to reveal the world isn’t populated by superheroes, but just hordes of confused, morally compromised adults who have no idea what they’re doing…

While Kenny Omega is kicking Adam Cole to the curb and replacing him with Marty Scurll in the Bullet Club, Finn Balor appears to have been laying the groundwork for his own new Balor Club addition – WWE reporter/interviewer Cathy Kelley, with the two being spotted Holding Hands In Public!

As fun as who’s dating who gossip can be in WWE, I’m more interested in Balor’s long-distance relationships. Namely, the one with the promotion that made his name, New Japan Pro Wrestling, which Finn paid tribute to on Twitter as their Best of the Super Juniors 2017 tournament got underway. Look – a Zack Sabre Jr. in the wild.

WWE Backlash 2017 Predictions

18 May 2017 10:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Liam Hoofe with his predictions for this Sunday’s WWE Backlash

This Sunday night SmackDown will host its first PPV since WrestleMania. The brand has undergone a lot of changes since the showcase of the immortals and Sunday will be a chance for them to showcase the new direction they appear to be heading in.

The event is being marketed around the in-ring debut of Shinsuke Nakamura, who will face Dolph Ziggler in a match that could easily be one of the best seen in the WWE so far this year. There are plenty of other interesting matches on the card though, and with Raw having delivered a fairly solid PPV three weeks ago at Payback, SmackDown will want to do their best to top that this Sunday night.

Here are my match by match predictions for the event:

Pre-Show: Tye Dillinger Vs Aiden English

This is a classic pre-show match. »

Are you a WWE superstar down on your luck? Having to undergo serious elbow surgery back in February and abandoned by your life coach Bob Backlund? Well then why don’t you try the Jinder Mahal diet!

It includes no bread, no pizza, dear god that looks incredible and no fun of any kind.

Just look at No Days Off Darren Young, who’s tweeted a remarkable 3 month body transformation on his road to recovery.
