What Does Will Smith Really Think About Wild Wild West?

23 June 2016 6:05 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

This summer marks the 20th Anniversary of the hit blockbuster Independence Day, which turned Will Smith into a massive superstar overnight. It became the first movie ever to gross more than $500 million worldwide, and, naturally, after that movie started raking it in at the box office, everyone wanted Will Smith in their movies. Over the next few years, Will Smith would go on to star in hits such as Men in Black and Enemy of the State, but the actor recently addressed one of his missteps, the 1999 Western action adaptation of the Wild Wild West TV show which brought in some sci-fi elemenst to boot.

Wild Wild West wasn't an absolute bomb in theaters, but it still came in far below the rest of his hits over the late 1990s. Wild Wild West took in $113.4 million domestically and $222.1 million worldwide, from a hefty $170 million budget back in 1999. Will Smith starred »

'Independence Day', 'Shallows' & 'Free State of Jones' Must Contend with 'Finding Dory'

23 June 2016 10:32 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Summer 2016 is heating up after last week's massive opening for Disney and Pixar's Finding Dory and its impressive day-to-day performance ever since. Hoping to add some fuel to the box office fire, this weekend's crop of new releases are led by Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the blockbuster hit of Summer 1996. Also opening this weekend, Stx will target adult audiences with Free State of Jones, Blake Lively must survive a killer shark in The Shallows and Broad Green is delivering Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon into just over 780 theaters. It's a crowded marketplace with a little something for everybody. Quelling some of the suspense, the battle for box office supremacy this weekend might not be much of a battle at all. Pixar's forgetful fish should handily take down the alien invaders as Finding Dory is looking at a $70+ million second weekend while Fox's Independence Day sequel carries a big budget, »

Sacha Baron Cohen Is Mandrake the Magician

7 June 2016 6:22 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Way back in 2012, Warner Bros. announced they were moving forward on a Mandrake the Magician movie, based on the iconic comic strip created by Lee Falk that debuted in 1934. We haven't heard anything further about this project in the four years since then, but now it seems to be moving forward, with Sacha Baron Cohen coming aboard to star. Ethan Cohen, who made his directorial debut last year with Get Hard, is attached to direct.

The original comic strip followed the title character, an illusionist and a powerful hypnotist. He uses his abilities to fight crime with Lothar, one of the strongest men in the world. Universal Pictures produced a 12-part serial based on the comic strip in 1939, but the character has not been seen on the big screen ever since. There was also a 1954 TV movie based on the character that starred Coe Norton, but now it seems Mandrake »

Sacha Baron Cohen Starring as ‘Mandrake the Magician’

7 June 2016 4:42 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sacha Baron Cohen is attached to star in Warner Bros.’ long-stalled “Mandrake the Magician” movie.

Etan Cohen, who made his directorial debut on “Get Hard” for the studio, is on board to to direct with Atlas Entertainment producing. The studio is seeking a writer for the project, which has been in development for more than a decade.

Mandrake first appeared in Lee Falk’s 1934 comic strip as a stage magician and powerful illusionist who spent his efforts battling gangsters, mad scientists, extraterrestrials and characters from other dimensions. The character was the subject of a 12-part serial Columbia Pictures released in 1939.

Variety reported in 2012 that “Puss in Boots” scribe Tom Wheeler had been brought on to rewrite “Mandrake the Magician” for Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment. Hyde Park and Baldwin Entertainment Group were developing the project in 2005.

Sacha Baron Cohen Will Be 'Mandrake The Magician'

7 June 2016 3:39 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

A movie starring Sacha Baron Cohen is being made. Alright now that I have your attention, let me tell you what that movie is going to be. Mandrake The Magician. Yes, I have no idea who that is, and I won't pretend like I'm a Mandrake diehard who can tell you what his first appearance was or who created him. All I know is Sacha Baron Cohen is going to portray the character in a new movie.

The movie is being directed by Etan Cohen, who's only relation to Sacha Baron Cohen is the last name. Don't get mad at me, I read his Wikipedia page, I don't see a single lick of evidence that would prove both men are related, even if I wish that was the case because it'd be cool to have a duo of brothers working on the film with one directing, and one leading. James Bobin Teases “Awesome” Script For Mib 23, Shooting To Commence Later This Year

25 May 2016 9:35 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

First outed during Sony’s calamitous hacking scandal of 2014, that Men in Black/Jump Street movie is on the verge of becoming a reality, having appointed director James Bobin at the helm and nabbed an official title in Mib 23.

Currently doing the press rounds for Alice Through the Looking Glass, Bobin was quizzed about the franchise crossover while speaking with Collider. Considering that Mib 23 is without a firm release date, we’ve only caught fleeting teases of what to expect from Sony’s event film up until now, but Bobin did hint that Jenko and Schmidt – the two sons of bitches that they are – could be going to the Men in Black headquarters before the year’s end.

Bobin began by dancing around specifics, noting that Mib 23 stands as the “working title” for the time being, before addressing the critics that have called the core concept into question. »

Roland Emmerich on Will Smith’s absence from Independence Day: Resurgence

15 May 2016 8:10 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite the fact that Independence Day: Resurgence is bringing back several cast members from the original movie, there is one name absent from the roster of the 1996 blockbuster, with Will Smith opting against a return to the franchise. Speaking to Comic Book, director Roland Emmerich has revealed that Smith was originally set to return, but decided against it following his experience on After Earth and Men in Black 3.

“In the very beginning, [Will Smith] was on board,” states Emmerich. “He was actually very excited to do it but it got a little bit unlucky there. Even I needed kind of like two years to get through two scripts. We wanted to make two scripts because when we have Will we want to have two right away. We sent him the scripts just when he was doing After Earth and wanted to create his own trilogy and had just done Men in Black 3 »

How Will Smith Changed "Resurgence"

There's only a month to go before Roland Emmerich's "Independence Day: Resurgence" hits cinemas, a film which sees the return of several key cast members from the original film including Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Vivica A. Fox.

One name that won't be returning is Will Smith, the actor who was at one time was attached during the sequel's long development phase. At the time, versions of the film both with and without Smith were reportedly being prepared.

Ultimately the actor opted out to star in David Ayer's "Suicide Squad" instead. Meanwhile Emmerich's film effectively killed off Smith's character in a tragic accident that takes place years before the events of 'Resurgence'. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Emmerich revealed how Smith's departure had a massive impact on the overall story of the sequel:

17 movie sequels that are stuck in development hell

Meet the films sequels that might not be dead, but are certainly stuck in some kind of limbo...

Every now and then, a sequel that appears to have been in the cooker for a while – Zoolander 2, Dumb And Dumber To, Anchorman 2 – finally escapes into the wild. But the journey to the screen can be a very lengthy one, and this little lot are still trying to find their way to your local multiplex…

Dick Tracy 2

Disney gambled hard on bringing Dick Tracy to the screen in the summer of 1990, backing the vision of director and star Warren Beatty, and hoping to ape the success that Warner Bros had enjoyed the summer before with Batman. Yet whilst Dick Tracy hit, it didn’t hit too hard. The studio adjusted its-then blockbuster strategy accordingly, and it wouldn’t really be until it got to the likes of »

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 episode 15 review: Spacetime

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. delivers one of its best episodes to date with season 3’s Spacetime, full of snazzy powers and big confrontations..

This review contains spoilers

3.15 Spacetime

When I saw the premise for this episode – essentially 'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. does Minority Report' – I was a bit sceptical. Could 45 minutes do justice to a sci-fi concept as massive as precognition? I was worried that the idea may come across as cheesy, like it did in Men In Black 3. Or, worse still, that it would throw up the type of timey-wimey plot holes that always incur internet backlash.

But, I’m glad to report that my doubts were unnecessary. Spacetime – thanks to a ballsy script by the showrunners, and confident direction from the oft-impressive Kevin Tancharoen - felt like one of the most imaginative and well-engineered Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. instalments to date.

A Classic 1980's Comedy Is Getting The Remake Treatment, Here's What We Know

The director of Get Hard is set to bring The Cannonball Run back to our screens...

Warner Bros has picked up the rights to remake The Cannonball Run, is the remake news of the day. That said, the studio is calling this a relaunch rather than a remake, but either way, a new Cannonball Run movie is on the way.

The original films (there were effectively three of them in all) pitted a broad ensemble of stars together in a huge, illegal cross-country race. We'd imagine the basic setup is likely to be the same, although no stars have been announced thus far.

We do have a writer and director, though. Etan J Cohen made his directorial debut with last year's Get Hard, and his screenwriting credits include Men In Black 3, Tropic Thunder and Idiocracy. He's got the job of writing and directing the new The Cannonball Run. »

'Cannonball Run' Remake Moves Forward with 'Get Hard' Director

After several years in development, Warner Bros. is finally moving forward on a new incarnation of The Cannonball Run. Deadline reports that the studio has secured the rights to the original 1981 classic, hiring Etan Cohen to write the script and direct. This report claims the studio doesn't consider this project a "remake," but rather a "relaunch" of the franchise.

Back in 2011, we reported that Warner Bros. was in discussions to team up with auto manufacturer General Motors for a Cannonball Run remake. At that time, the studio was eyeing directors such as Guy Ritchie (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) and Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian). It seemed that deal never went through, but now the studio has acquired the sequel and remake rights from the copyright holders, original The Cannonball Run writer Brock Yates, the estate of director Hal Needham and Fortune Star Ltd.
