British director Steve McQueen made news earlier today when his sex-addict drama Shame starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan earned a Nc-17 rating from the MPAA. McQueen stayed busy as Variety also reported today that Brad Pitt agreed to play one of the lead roles in his upcoming period drama 12 Years a Slave. Pitt earlier agreed to produce the film via his Plan B shingle. McQueen co-wrote the script with John Ridley and Chiwetel Ejiofor signed on to play Solomon Northrup, a New York citizen kidnapped in Washington in 1841 and sent to work as a slave on a Louisiana cotton plantation until he was saved in 1853. »

Ben Drew's (a.k.a. rapper Plan B) directorial debut Ill Manors has been picked up by Revolver Entertainment Film is budgeted at £100,000 ($165,000) pic with funding coming from Film London's low-budget Microwave scheme, reports Variety. Ill Manors is apparently a dark, multi-character story which takes place on the tough streets of east London. Drew wrote the script for the film which is in post production. "Nader and Simin: A Separation" Golden Bear
Asghar Fahradi, who got a lot of Oscar buzz a couple years back (though no nomination) for About Elly, won this year's Golden Bear for Nader & Simin: A Separation (2011). The Hollywood Reporter explains the film like so.
Farhadi's drama traces the breakup of a Iranian family set against the political tensions in Tehran. While not overtly political, Nader and Simin is starkly critical of conditions in Iran, notably the country's huge class divide. It was widely tipped to win Berlin's top prize, not least because of the current upheaval in the Middle East.

Richard Jenkins is in Cogan's Trade, joining Brad Pitt in the Andrew Dominik crime caper. In Cogan's Trade, Pitt stars as a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high-stakes poker game which is held under the protection of the mob. Jenkins (Let Me In, The Visitor) will play a lawyer who relays inside information about the card game, reports Variety. Sam Rockwell, James Gandolfini and Bella Heathcote co-star in the film, which starts shooting later this month in New Orleans. Pitt and Dede Gardner are producing Cogan's Trade via Plan B banner alongside Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz of Chockstone.. »
