Fortissimo’s Michael Werner Receives Udine Honor

Udine, Italy – Michael Werner, chairman of Hong Kong- and Amsterdam-based Fortissimo Films, was Saturday awarded the Golden Mulberry Award for services to Asian cinema.

The award was made at the 16th edition of the Far East Film Festival in Udine. The prize was presented on stage by Marco Mueller, artistic director of the Rome Film Festival, and by Sabrina Baracetti and Thomas Bertacche, co-heads of the Udine festival.

The presentation was made ahead of a screening of “The Midnight After,” the hit politically-tinged sci-fi film by Hong Kong director Fruit Chan. Fortissimo handles international sales of both “Midnight” and “Black Coal, Thin Ice,” the cutting edge Chinese thriller that won Golden and Silver Bears in Berlin in February, both of which screen in Udine.

“Michael and Fortissimo have been guiding lights of Asian films for us in the West and for film festivals like ours,” said Baracetti. “Michael’s willingness »

Dream Home (2010) Film Review

31 January 2014 7:11 PM, PST | MoreHorror | See recent MoreHorror news »

Written by Brandy Bunce

Look back at your childhood and how you imagined yourself as an adult, did you come even close to that expectation in reality? Sometimes in life we place our bar of expectation too high and thanks to the help of the economy, lack of the proper skills or our own bad choices in life those goals are impossible to meet.

Dream Home is all about one woman’s childhood goal of owning her dream home in a time when housing prices in Hong Kong are astronomical, the daily struggles she has to endure and the morbid measures she is willing to go to, to make her dream come true. If you like the typical blood, sex, occasional drug use with a humorous undertone at times in your slasher films, then this one is definitely for you.

Rigor Mortis sets in on Hong Kong DVD

20 January 2014 10:57 AM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

A quick update for those of us (that would be most of us) awaiting the DVD debut of Rigor Mortis. The Hong Kong version, complete with English subtitles, goes on sale January 23, 2014. Best known for performances in Revenge: A Love Story and Dream Home, Juno Mak has turned his attention to directing, and judging by the quality of this sneak peak, there's a strong possibility he might be on to something. Starring Anthony Chan and Siu-hou Chin, Rigor Mortis is an effects-laden, but ultimately striking, horror debut from the Best Actor at the 2011 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. Co-produced by J-Horror icon Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On), and reuniting some of the original cast members of the classic Mr Vampire series, Rigor Mortis is set in a haunted housing tower overrun by ghosts, vampires and zombies. Chin Siu-ho is a washed-up, former vampire hunting actor, down on his luck and penniless. He »

Fearnet Movie Review: 'Hide and Seek'

14 January 2014 10:30 AM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

It sure seems like a lot of Asian horror films have to do with real estate in one way or another. I'm thinking specifically of the Grudge series from Japan and the rather excellent Dream Home (2010) from Hong Kong, but I'm certain there are several others. (Hey, I needed a clever opening.) And of course I brought up that first point because I have another solid import to add to the list: Korea's Hide and Seek, which comes from first-time writer/director Jung Huh, and was a pretty big hit in its native country.

Best described as a mystery/thriller that delves deeply into horror territory by the time the kinetically entertaining third act shows up, Hide and Seek ("Sum-bakk-og-jil" in Korean) starts out with a creepy little misdirection of a subplot that makes a lot more sense later on, but is mainly about a dour and fastidious middle-aged family »

If you're hankering to live near the wilderness but still in high style, then you may want to put in your bid to win this year's Hgtv Dream Home. It'll be introduced in a special, "Hgtv Dream Home 2014," Wednesday, Jan. 1, on Hgtv.

As it does every year, Hgtv has been building a luxury home to give away to a lucky viewer. This year, it's in Truckee, Calif., not far from Lake Tahoe. In the "new mountain" style, the 3,200-square-foot house has three bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths and sits directly on the Schaffer's Mill Golf Club Course, surrounded by evergreens.

Accepting of entries began on Dec. 27 and continues until 3 p.m. Et on Feb. 14; viewers can enter twice a day, once at Hgtv.com and once at FrontDoor.com. The winner will be randomly selected in March. Along with the house, the winner gets a new Gmc vehicle and $250,000.
