Just in time for the latest Ebola outbreak comes “Cabin Fever: Patient Zero,” the second (but one doubts last) in-name-only sequel to Eli Roth’s 2002 cult hit about the scorched-earth path of a flesh-eating virus. Cheap enough to make Roger Corman wince and so strenuously serious (at least until someone gets their face smashed in with a giant dildo) that you pine for the “Mystery Science Theater” commentary track, “Patient Zero” brings the bad biological voodoo to the Dominican Republic, where unethical doctors and hard-partying tourists battle to escape an infected isle with their epidermises intact. Only the least discerning of gore hounds will have the patience to see who emerges victorious.
Until well past the hour mark, “Patient Zero” seem like two separate, equally uninspired riffs on Roth’s overhyped original, as if the filmmakers had started down one path, run aground, then started over again and haphazardly stitched together the results. »

*full disclosure: a theatrical screening of this film was provided by Sinister Cinemas and Raven Banner Entertainment. Director: Kaare Andrews. Writer: Jake Wade Wall. Cast: Sean Astin, Currie Graham, Ryan Donowho, Brando Eaton and Jillian Murray. Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero was originally developed as a prequel. This film would be the first in the franchise, followed by Eli Roth's Cabin Fever (2002) and Ti West's Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009). Later, the script was reworked and the film is the second sequel in the franchise. And really, this is a standalone film as this title has only the loosest connections with the previous two films. This second sequel uses several standard indie horror features, which will be recognizable to most fans. However, actor Sean Astin as Porter offers a few deadly surprises along the way. Also, a few slower moments threaten to derail the momentum of the film, »

So as promised I watched the first episode of From Dusk Till Dawn the series and….pretty damn good actually. It starts off with a scene that will come to mean more as the series wears on and which calls back to the second straight to DVD From Dusk Till Dawn sequel Hangman’s Daughter which dealt with the origins of Salma Hayek’s Santanico Pandemonium head vampire character. After this we are back in sort of familiar territory with Don Johnson playing a suitably grizzled and weary Texas Ranger Earl McGraw on the look out for the Gecko Brothers who are on the lam and headed for Mexico.
Basically when it comes down to it, From Dusk Till Dawn is like a faithful adaptation of the original novel that the first film was based on if that were the case and it wasn’t an early Tarantino script. So »

I really really wanted to enjoy this film. I did. Im pulling for the man in the directors chair. I found a very strange degree of satisfaction from Kaare Andrews 2010 effort Altitude (I know the general consensus is that the movie sucked an epically large golf ball and Ill admit it wasnt a perfect piece of work by any stretch) and I thought his work in ABCs of Death was solid (he handled the V for Vagitus segment). It shouldnt come as a surprise that I anticipated an extremely gnarly addition to the mans rsum. Forward momentum seemed inevitable for Andrews. And Sean Astin is attached for heavens sake Im heartbroken to say that we just didnt get the revolting prize that could have been. Its not here. »
Mainstream horror has shifted from gore to ghosts and found footage in the past few years, but there's still room for a good old fashioned splatter film here and there. Image Entertainment has acquired "Cabin Fever: Patient Zero," the third film in the horror franchise started by Eli Roth's cult classic "Cabin Fever." Directed by Kaare Andrews ("Altitude," "The ABCs of Death"), the film follows a group of friends enjoying a bachelor weekend in a yacht on the Caribbean. Because these things never go well, they find a remote island and stumble upon an abandoned research facility, where a deadly flesh-eating virus waits for them. They then have to find an uninfected survivor, "Patient Zero," in order to survive. The film stars Sean Astin ("The Lord of the Rings"), Currie Graham (Pompeii), Ryan Donowho (Soldiers of Fortune"), Mitch Ryan ("One Tree Hill"), and Jillian Murphy ("Bad Ass"), and follows »

I distinctly remember the hype surrounding the release of the original Cabin Fever movie – written and directed by then newcomer Eli Roth, the film was touted as a new breed of horror, made for genre fans by a genre fan. I also remember when the film was eventually released there was somewhat of a backlash, after all it wasn’t much more than a mix of backwoods horror and “melt movie”. But the film did well enough to warrant a sequel which, after wrangles between director Ti West (House of the Devil) and the films producers – who re-edited the film to such an extent that West disowned the movie, was released in 2009. Slammed by even those who loved the original film, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever »

There were various victims who are infected as well as most of the main cast," says Guastini about spreading the red, "as well as an entire river bog of various infected, in all stages of this type of disease, both done with actors in prosthetics and with custom-made dummies made just for this production. »
