True Grit (1969)

References

The Night of the Hunter (1955)
The opening song in "True Grit," "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms," was sung or whistled repeatedly by the preacher played by Robert Mitchum, including in a climactic scene, where Lilian Gish's character joins in. Also, one of the final scenes, in which Mattie Ross is being carried back to town on Rooster Cogburn's horse, is strongly reminiscent of a sequence in "Night of the Hunter" where the children run away from home to evade the preacher.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Barry Pepper's character in Saving Private Ryan (1998) whispers a prayer before making a long shot with his rifle. In this film Matt Damon's character whispers a similar prayer before shooting Barry Pepper's character with a long shot from his rifle.
