Horror films, thrillers, anything scary I shy away from.

Heck, let me be honest, I run away from them. I decided to watch Highway 13 since I knew some of the people involved in the making of the film. How scary could it be, right? This 17-minute film captures every uncomfortable and uneasy feeling from the first shot. A dark road only lit by headlights, juxtaposed against a catchy song, a girlfriend sleeping in the passenger's seat, a boyfriend trying to stay awake behind the wheel. Filmmaker Stanley Papulkas sets the scene with an everyday occurrence, one many of us have experienced, where you hope you can just get around the bend safely and stay awake a little while longer.

What makes this film stand out, aside from the perfect cinematography and tight camera shots which capture every facial nuance, is the feeling of familiarity, that we too, would act like the characters if found in the same predicament. How many of us can really walk (run away) from someone in need? Great job by all involved. This is a quality short film that showcases talented Canadian actors and is something we need more of.
