Alex Garland of 'Ex Machina' follows others who took a writing-to-directing leap

11 April 2015 | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Alex Garland, screenwriter of “28 Days Later,” “Sunshine” and “Never Let Me Go,” makes an impressive directorial debut with cerebral sci-fi thriller “Ex Machina” (in theaters today), but Garland waves off the achievement of leaping to directing as “just next in a continuum.” “The truth was that there was no epiphany moment about directing, because I just don’t dignify the directing role the way we’re supposed to,” the British filmmaker told The Dissolve. “There are a few people — like Woody Allen, he’s an auteur, and I’m cool with that. But for me, directing is about collaboration.” Whether directing is a logical next step or a hard-sought achievement for screenwriters, it’s often done by telling studios, “Hey, here’s my next screenplay. You can have it as long as I get to direct.” Preston Sturges — at the time the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood — is noted for »

‘Wolves’ DVD Review

30 March 2015 1:53 PM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Lucas Till, Stephen McHattie, John Pyper-Ferguson, Merritt Patterson, Jason Momoa, Janet-Laine Green, Melanie Scrofano, Adam Butcher, Philip Maurice Hayes, Miriam McDonald | Written and Directed by David Hayter

I, like many horror fans, know that the werewolf movie is the hardest of all the horror sub-genres to get right. For every American Werewolf in London, there’s an American Werewolf in Paris… But once in a while a movie comes along that successfully captures what makes the genre great. Wolves is one such movie.

Written and directed by David Hayter, who has penned such blockbuster films as X-Men and its sequel; and the film adaptation of Watchmen, Wolves tells the story of Cayden Richards. Your typical all-American jock, Cayden goes on the run following a vicious football incident and the murder of his parents – possibly at Cayden’s hands. You see Cayden is changing and not in your typical high-school teenager way. »

WolfCop Blu-Ray Review

26 March 2015 10:57 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Werewolf movies can either be a howlin’ good time like Adrián García Bogliano’s Late Phases, taking a bite out of softer genre efforts, or they can be like David Hayter’s Wolves, a mainstream safety net that makes you want to cuddle a werewolf instead of run away in fear. Werewolves can be horrifying, menacing beasts, or overgrown house pets, spanning a varied spectrum of physical embodiments from humanistic (Wer) to cartoony (Wolves), which is why I have to commend filmmaker Lowell Dean on creating a werewolf movie full of gore, hilarity, and a werewolf police officer who’s more of a comic book hero than furry mythical creature. WolfCop is “Dirty Harry only hairier,” and his first case is every bit a bonkers B-Movie revival that midnight movie fans pray for – littered with fairytale references and a little animalistic cavorting for all you furry exhibitionists out there!

Wolves (2014)

Written by: David Hayter

Directed by: David Hayter

Cast: Lucas Till (Cayden Richards), Stephen McHattie (John Tollerman), John Pyper-Ferguson (Wild Joe), Merritt Patterson (Angelina Timmins), Jason Momoa (Conner), Janet Laine-Green (Clara Tollerman), Melanie Scrofano (Gail Timmins), Adam Butcher (Deke), Philip Maurice Hayes (Kino)

I saw a random preview of this film at the theatre before the feature film that I was there to see. It was the climax battle scene between the two primary characters. Both were wolfed out and talking some trash. I never heard from “Wolves” again until I saw it streaming on Netflix. I reserve judgment as one should until I actually watch something. I always have a golden strand of optimism to grasp on to. When it comes to werewolf films, I’ve found myself becoming a little pessimistic. The last film that really nailed it was “Dog Soldiers »

'Aquaman' Star Jason Momoa Joins 'The Bad Batch'

6 February 2015 5:56 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Just one month after Annapurna Pictures and Vice teamed up to make The Bad Batch, Aquaman star Jason Momoa is in negotiations to join the cast. The actor will play the leader of a group of cannibals, "whose young daughter disappears with a woman who manages to escape the community after losing some key body parts." The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Texas wasteland, although no other specific story details were given.

Ana Lily Amirpour is directing from her own screenplay, with Annapurna's Megan Ellison producing alongside Danny Gabai and Sina Sayyah, with Vice's Eddy Moretti and Shane Smith executive producing. No production schedule was given, although this will likely go before cameras before Jason Momoa suits up as Aquaman in Justice League Part 1 and Justice League Part 2.

The film is Ana Lily Amirpour's follow-up to her directorial debut A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, which was released in theaters last year. »
