The Breeder's Cup Begins!
15 March 2009 | by (Lockport, NY, United States) – See all my reviews

It's the week of the (now) two-day 2008 Breeder's Cup even, held this year at the track in which this program has taken place: Santa Anita, just north of Los Angeles, and a lot of prime horse and big-name jockeys have arrived. That makes it tougher for the local riders pictured on this show. It's harder for them to get mounts.

This year, the Cup will feature 14 races and offer $25 million in purses. It's "The Super Bowl of Horse Racing," as one person puts it here on this episode.

With just five days left, luckless veteran journeyman Jon Court still has hope. One of his mounts - on horse called "Orthodox" - still has an outside chance of being entered in the Juvenile Turf event. Court will need a half dozen horses to be late scratches, but it's possible. It comes down to almost the last day - one horse left - before Court receives the good news: he's in!! He and his wife and agent are all thrilled.

We get a glimpse of the great horse Curlin, who will be the star attraction at the Breeder's Cup Saturday. The comments about the horse and how he carries himself are very interesting.

We see one of these riders featured on "Jockey's" with a mount in the first race of the Breeder's Cup on Friday. That is young Joe Talamo who is aboard California Flag, who goes off at 8-1. He looks good until the stretch, when he fades out-of-the-money. Joe shrugs it off. "Dreams are made and dreams are broken," he says.

Next up is Court and his mount. With 30 years of racing obscurity, a win would be - by far - the biggest of his life. That's when the program ends. We'll have to see what happens next week.
