7 actresses land on new True Detective season 2 shortlist

15 September 2014 10:59 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Contrary to reports citing that actresses like Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Rachel McAdams (About Time) were close to signing deals to appear on the hotly anticipated second season of True Detective, their names do not appear on a new shortlist released by TheWrap. Today the site revealed the names of seven actresses currently vying to fill one of the series’ leading roles.

The actresses in question are, Brit Marling (The Keeping Room), Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones), Jaimie Alexander (Thor), Kelly Reilly (Eden Lake), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Rosario Dawson (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) and Jessica Biel (Total Recall).

The actresses have reportedly been “invited back to read this week for the coveted role.” Moss and McAdams could very well still be in the running, but with writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto now focusing on auditioning a new group of actresses, he’s clearly taking all options into consideration. »

Kate Beckinsale Not Returning for Underworld: Next Generation!

12 September 2014 | Horror Asylum | See recent Horror Asylum news »

A little while back reports were that Screen Gems were actively working on a new 'Underworld' sequel. Tentatively titled 'Underworld: Next Generation' fans were suitably excited about plans for a fifth chapter but may be dismayed to hear today that star Kate Beckinsale -below ('Total Recall') will in fact Not return as Selene! Noooooooo. Personally just a promise of seeing Kate leathered up once more would cover my price of admission right there. Now we're not so sure. British 'Divergent' actor Theo James (who many will know as the d#ckhead in 'The Inbetweeners Movie') will be reprising his role as David, who first appeared in 'Underworld: Awakening' back in 2012. No director is currently lined up but will get to helm from a script penned by Cory Goodman. »

Ranked: Every Summer Movie Season Since 1980 - Part 1

8 September 2014 4:11 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.

On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production »

Warner Bros. Slots American Sniper, Moves Point Break And The Man From U.N.C.L.E

13 August 2014 6:41 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Last week, Warner Bros. dropped a massive bombshell by scheduling nine new DC Comics films in addition to two Lego Movie follow-ups and two ‘WB Event Films’ which may or may not be Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequels. And though this week’s crop of release date announcements isn’t anywhere near as earthshaking, there are still some exciting projects that we now know when to mark our calendars for.

First up, the Clint Eastwood-directed American Sniper has been set for a limited bow on December 25th, 2014, suggesting that the studio believes in the drama’s Oscar chances. It stars Bradley Cooper as decorated marksman Chris Kyle, whose memoir American Sniper: The Autobiography Of The Most Lethal Sniper In U.S. Military History was adapted by Jason Dean Hall (Paranoia). The film will follow that limited release by going wide on January 16th next year. »

New Release Date Announced for The Mummy Reboot

31 July 2014 3:42 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Yesterday we reported that The Mummy reboot was finally starting to emerge from its cinematic tomb with a new director, Alex Kurtzman, announced at the helm. Originally slated to come out in theaters on April 22nd, 2016, Universal Pictures has already revealed a new release date for the upcoming Mummy movie that will have fans waiting just a bit longer to see this monster in action.

Deadline reveals that The Mummy reboot will now hit cinemas on June 26th, 2016. Since the release has only been delayed by about two months, there shouldn’t be any major holdbacks in production.

The reason for the move comes from another big Universal property that filled in the abandoned April 22nd slot: The Huntsman, the prequel to 2012′s Snow White and the Huntsman that will be directed by Frank Darabont (showrunner on Season 1 of The Walking Dead, director of The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption »

Director Found for The Mummy Reboot

30 July 2014 5:25 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

The Mummy reboot has been clawing at the walls of its cinematic tomb since 2012, when producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci signed a production deal with Universal Pictures. After going through two directors and collecting dust, the movie is finally finding its way into the light, as a new director for the film has been announced, one who is already deeply invested in the project.

According to THR, Universal has looked to Alex Kurtzman to helm The Mummy reboot, which is set for an April 22nd, 2016 release. Kurtzman is already a producer on the project and has been a major contributor along with fellow producer Chris Morgan in planning out an interconnected cinematic environment with Universal’s classic monsters. Kurtzman and his writing collaborator Roberto Orci have worked on the script penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). 'The Mummy' Reboot Lands 'Venom' Director Alex Kurtzman

30 July 2014 4:20 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Two weeks ago, Universal Pictures announced it is moving forward with plans to construct a massive, interconnected monster movie universe with writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Today, we have word that Alex Kurtzman is in final talks to direct the first entry into this franchise, the Untitled Mummy Reboot.

Len Wiseman (Total Recall) was initially attached to direct before he bowed out, paving the way for Andres Muschietti (Mama) to come on board before he left in May. However, both of those filmmakers were on board before this inter-connected monster universe was hatched. The Mummy Reboot will be the first project launched within this cinematic universe, setting the tone for those that come after it.

While no plot details have been confirmed, insiders claim that the project is set in present day, with a whole new set of characters. The reboot is said to be more of an action-adventure with horror elements, »

Alex Kurtzman to Direct The Mummy Reboot for Universal

30 July 2014 4:16 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It was recently revealed that Universal had decided to take advantage of their library of classic movie monsters (which includes the likes of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, Creature Of The Black Lagoon, and The Mummy) by hiring Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to expand and unify a world featuring these characters.

Well, it has been confirmed tonight that Kurtzman will direct The Mummy for the studio in preparation for a release date of April 22nd, 2016. It’s set to be the first instalment in a new wave of monster movies, so there will be a lot of pressure on the writer to make this a success and set the tone moving forwards.

The original trilogy was helmed by Steve Sommers and starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The franchise grossed north of $1.2 billion, but it’s been a struggle to get this reboot going as both Len Wiseman (Total Recall »

The Vampire Diaries Adds Carrie Diaries Star Chris Wood To Season Six

18 July 2014 5:27 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The Vampire Diaries has offered up a steady stream of casting news this week, and they’re not done yet. Earlier today, the CW announced that former star of The Carrie Diaries, Chris Wood, has been cast in a recurring role for the upcoming season.

According to TV Guide, Wood will be playing a character name Kai, who is a charmingly unstable newcomer with the unsettling ability to seem normal as the situation demands. He can be both playful and obsessive with a mix of adolescent angst. Considering this is a show where vampires pretend to be normal humans on a daily basis, it seems like he’s going to do just fine. In fact, he may be the perfect candidate to join the supernatural club.

This comes on the heels of news that four other characters have been added for season six. Eureka’s Craig Ferguson will be playing »

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes movie review: people get ready

18 July 2014 4:50 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

A magnificent science fiction drama, and a beautiful one. Wonderfully radical for the simple fact that it is ruled by principled ideas. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

We need a bigger word than humanist.

That was a word I used to describe the lovely, honest, sensitive Rise of the Planet of the Apes — and god, did it feel good to be able to connect those words with a big-budget science fiction movie. But now it feels too small to encompass where Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes the ongoing story. People-ist is the first coinage that leaps to mind, clunky as it is. Because there are nonhumans here who are as fully people as the humans are… in fact, the story is very much about the humans coming to »

There's been an abundance of bland projects lately for the lovely Kate Beckinsale. With films like Total Recall, Contraband and Underworld: Awakening being the most recent films in her career, she needs to do some recovering. Perhaps she'll find relief in The Disappointments Room, a new project that Deadline reports Disturbia and Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso will direct for Relativity Media. The film is described as being a psychological thriller in the same vein as The Shining, but the film sounds just like plenty of other horror films we've seen about a family moving into an old, haunted house with dark secrets.
