Point Break Review

30 December 2015 11:09 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Point Break makes no sense. It doesn’t seem to be trying very hard to make sense, either. A remake of the improbably fun 1991 crime thriller of the same name, 2015’s version only serves to inject excess adrenaline into this updated version of an already flimsy conceit.

After his future in the world of extreme sports takes a cliff dive, Johnny “Utah” Brigham completes a Ged, undergraduate, and law degree before entering the FBI’s training academy. His experience becomes an essential tool when a gang of skydiving thrill-seekers steals a pallet-load of stacked cash from a cargo plane, only to cut the ties and rain money on the poor villagers below. It somehow takes the expressionless lunk Utah to consider that fellow extreme athletes are behind these Robin Hood heists.

Not that the investigation really matters. Utah is assigned to gather information on these philanthropist adrenaline junkies but instead »

Blu-ray Review – Absolutely Anything (2015)

8 December 2015 11:30 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Absolutely Anything, 2015.

Directed by Terry Jones.

Starring Simon Pegg, Kate Beckinsale, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Robin Williams, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Rob Riggle, Eddie Izzard.

An absolutely average earthling (Simon Pegg) is given the galactic power to do absolutely anything by a group of sinister aliens. Whether he uses his power for good or evil will determine whether Earth will be destroyed.

Seeing the Monty Pythons’ names attached to any film should be a guarantee for laughs, as should the rest of this film’s A-list cast, yet Absolutely Anything falls rather short on the comedy front, feeling more like a clumsy collage of tropey high concept sci-fi, slapstick comedy, and tired jokes which are in dire need of a humour upgrade.

Neil Clarke (Pegg, Star Trek: Into Darkness) is a middle school teacher in London. His dreams of writing a novel remain just that, his love life is pathetic, »

Jason Statham to star in Kurt Wimmer-penned Hong Kong action-thriller

8 November 2015 12:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

British action star Jason Statham has signed on to star in a new action thriller from writer Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Total Recall, Point Break), which is centered around an Ex-Pat Brit in Hong Kong who goes on the run with a high-level female Chinese agent to solve a kidnapping with global implications.

“Jason and I both have been wanting to work with Kurt for a long time,” states producer Steven Chasman. “He has such an incredible vision for this film that this collaboration is particularly exciting for us. The narrative Kurt creates is incredibly rich and while our story is rooted in adventure, it is also very much character driven. We couldn’t be more fortunate to be working with him, as well as our new partners from Road Pictures, Gongming Cai and Julien Favre, who really comprehend the global potential for the film.”

Jason Statham to star in Hong Kong action movie from Kurt Wimmer

7 November 2015 2:57 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Jason Statham is one of the more consistent and prolific action stars working in Hollywood today, with many entries in the genre under his belt. As such, it makes sense that he's now been cast to play the lead in a Hong Kong action movie, written by Kurt Wimmer, which is as yet untitled.

Hong Kong action movies tend to be quite stunt-intensive, with a general inclination to do things practically (though to a lesser extent in recent years). Jason Statham is a very logical choice for this kind of filmmaking, since he has Mixed Martial Arts training, and a lot of action experience, preferring to do as many stunts as possible himself. Obviously, some are going to be too difficult or too dangerous for the star to do them all himself, so he's worked with numerous stuntmen over his career, who he has tremendous respect for.

Jason Statham Headed To Hong Kong For Untitled Kidnapping Thriller

6 November 2015 12:24 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Jason Statham, star of Spy, Furious 7 and all-round action stalwart, has agreed to topline Sj Pictures and Road Pictures yet-to-be-titled kidnapping thriller, which will take place primarily in Hong Kong.

Details are thin on the ground regarding The Stath’s latest picture, though we understand that he’ll headline the actioner as a British expatriate living in the Chinese metropolis, who becomes embroiled in a sprawling kidnapping case and opts to make tail and go on the run with a skilled Chinese operative. No word yet on a director to take the reins on the nascent project, though Road Pictures’ Gongming Cai and Julien Favre – attached to produce the picture along with Steve Chasman – are evidently excited to work with a genre expert.

“This is a perfect vehicle for Jason Statham to conquer the Chinese market — he is a true global superstar who has such an authentic connection with audiences around the world, »

Bruce Willis Thinks Terrible 'Die Hard: Year One' Concept Is A "Very Good Idea"

22 October 2015 12:57 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As you probably already know, Fox is squeezing whatever it can out of the "Die Hard" franchise, with plans for a prequel, "Die Hard: Year One," with Len Wiseman involved. Yes, the guy behind "Live Free Or Die Hard," the shoddy "Total Recall" remake, and the mastermind of the "Underworld" franchise. The idea is that the proposed movie will follow young, '70s era John McClane as we learn how he got so die hard-esque — a story that doesn't need to be told, and betrays the everyman roots of the character — with Bruce Willis popping up in present day sequences for some reason, probably to cash a paycheck. And shocker, Willis thinks the concept has merit. Die Hard 6 to be both origin story and sequel

14 October 2015 10:49 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Die Hard 6 is also set to serve as Die Hard: Year One. Len Wiseman is returning to direct...

Okay, best sit down.

It's little secret that Fox wants another Die Hard movie, and Bruce Willis - having sleepwalked his way through the piss-poor A Good Day To Die Hard - is seemingly keen to give John McClane one last hurrah too. But we never quite saw it happening like this.

Deadline is reporting that Die Hard 6 is to be something of an origins movie.

Take a minute.

It'll be a story part set in 1979, with McClane coming up as a cop in New York City, showing how he became the character we met at the start of the first movie (not that he was much of a superhero or anything at the start of the first Die Hard, but we'll park that there for the minute). ‘Die Hard 6’: Len Wiseman in Talks to Direct

14 October 2015 5:33 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Twentieth Century Fox is in negotiations with Len Wiseman to direct and produce the sixth installment in its durable 27-year-old “Die Hard” franchise.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is also producing. Bruce Willis is expected to return for “Die Hard 6” in a story that would focus on the origins of the younger John McClane character, set in New York City in 1979. The plan is for Willis to appear in the narrative as a present-day version of McClane.

The actor has not signed a deal yet. Willis previously worked with di Bonaventura in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”

The film is titled “Die Hard: Year One.” Fox has dispensed with numbers in the titles in the last three films.

Wiseman directed the fourth installment of the franchise in 2007 with “Live Free or Die Hard,” which grossed $383 million worldwide. The fifth film, 2013’s “A Good Day to Die Hard,” was directed by John Moore and grossed $304 million worldwide. »

'Point Break' Trailer #2 Takes Action to the Extreme

17 September 2015 1:07 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Following the first trailer from May and an action-packed preview released last week, Warner Bros. has debuted the second full trailer for their Point Break remake, arriving in theaters Christmas Day. Edgar Ramirez stars as the enigmatic Bodhi, who leads a group of thieves that have a far different agenda than most criminals. Luke Bracey plays FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrates Bodhi's group and learns about their path to enlightenment.

You may recall that the first Point Break poster revealed a group of skydivers watching a huge pallet full of money plummet to the ground. We get to see how this scene unfolds in the new footage, which reveals that Bodhi and his crew need to "give more than they take," as he dumps millions of dollars on an unsuspecting village. In addition to the trailer, we also have even more posters which showcase some of the extreme sports in the remake. »

'Point Break' Remake Poster and Surf Action Featurette

10 September 2015 12:22 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Ever since the Point Break remake was announced, we learned that this new version of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 classic will still feature Johnny Utah and Bodhi, only this time the story will be set within the world of extreme sports, not just surfing. The first poster released back in May featured a skydiver chasing after a huge pile of money, but today, Warner Bros. released a new one-sheet that brings the remake back to its roots, showcasing the new Utah (Luke Bracey) and Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez) riding a massive wave. The original poster came just one day before the first trailer arrived, so that could mean the second trailer is just around the corner.

In the fast-paced, high-adrenaline Point Break, a young FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey), infiltrates a cunning team of thrill-seeking elite athletes - led by the charismatic Bodhi (&#201dgar Ram&#237rez). The athletes are suspected of »

Colin Farrell Knows Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

7 August 2015 10:12 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Colin Farrell’s a great actor, but he’s kind of box-office poison.

Just look at this track record.

Total Recall? Bombed.

Fright Night? Nobody bothered.

Dead Man Down? Yup, I don’t really remember that either.

In fact, aside from his hysterical supporting turn in 2011’s Horrible Bosses, S.W.A.T was the actor’s last legitimate hit. That came out in 2003. Granted, since Miami Vice 9 years ago, he’s not been making particularly commercial choices, but for a man still considered an A-lister that reads pretty alarmingly.

Well that’s likely to change with the news he’s been cast in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Directed by David Yates and written by original novelist J.K Rowling, Farrell has landed a major role alongside Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice).

Farrell will play Graves, a wizarding accomplice of Redmayne’s protagonist, »

Bryan Cranston is back on TV, but is Sneaky Pete worth a peek?

7 August 2015 6:42 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Giovanni Ribisi stars as a conman in deep with a family of bounty hunters in this Amazon pilot, which also features an appearance by the Breaking Bad star. But will that be enough to claim those all-important user ratings?

Spoiler alert: this blog contains details from the pilot episode of Sneaky Pete, which is available to view free on Amazon Prime Instant Video

In Breaking Bad, he was the one who knocks. Then, with his armful of best actor Emmys and a last-gasp Golden Globe, Bryan Cranston knocked TV on the head, cashing in on the sustained critical hoopla surrounding Bb’s lopped-in-half final season to rack up some movie roles. He was a sporadic goodie in the sporadically good Godzilla update, and a roaring baddie in the roaringly bad Total Recall reboot.

Colin Farrell Brings His Magic to 'Harry Potter' Spin-Off 'Fantastic Beasts'

6 August 2015 7:50 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Opinions are (rightfully) divided when they come to "True Detective"'s second season, but almost everyone should agree Colin Farrell is doing some fine work. It's far from his best character, and all too often he's reduced to glum dialogue and sullen character traits. But he brings a fine gravitas, if you will, to the character and often makes even his worst lines have a dignity or weight behind them. It's a welcomed presence and, in a world defined by what they deserve, he's owed a better due. So, hopefully, with his next role, he'll get a better rep. Farrell is the latest to join the extensive cast of Warner Bros' Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He joins the J.K. Rowling-scripted feature as Graves, a New York wizard our lead Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) meets during a visit. The impending film takes place 70 years »

Fox’s Lucifer Trades Nicholas Gonzalez For Kevin Alejandro

1 July 2015 7:01 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Fox’s upcoming adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic series Lucifer has gone through a bit of a casting shuffle. According to Deadline, the show has lost actor Nicholas Gonzalez, who will be replaced by True Blood and Arrow alum Kevin Alejandro.

The role is that of a gruff homicide detective for the Lapd, who grows wary of the eponymous former Underworld ruler’s burgeoning relationship with his wife and daughter.

More News From The Web

No reason for Gonzalez’s exit was given, and it sounds like his part in the pilot will remain intact despite the role swap. That means there’s going to be a slight bit of confusion for viewers when the show debuts next midseason. Still, Alejandro should be a fine replacement, so I’m excited to see what he does with the role.
