Exclusive: Clip From Indie Comedy 'The Runway' Starring 'A Better Life' & 'Savages' Star Demian Bichir

18 July 2012 12:59 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

For Demian Bichir, the deserved Oscar nomination he received for his moving turn in "A Better Life," was validation for a career that has been building steadily. This year the actor is beginning to see the payoff with more substantial roles in bigger films like Oliver Stone's "Savages" (where he was one of the highlights) and Robert Rodriguez's "Machete Kills" which is now shooting. But this week a film arrives that is likely to serve as a reminder of how he came to the attention of Hollywood in the first place. Bichir stars in "The Runway," the sophomore feature film from writer/director Ian Power. Inspired by true events, the comedy tells the story of Ernesto (Bichir), a Colombian pilot whose plane has crashed in a small Irish village. Not able to speak a word of English, he befriends a precocious 9-year-old boy named Paco (Jamie Kierans), the »

17 July 2012 4:45 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Searching for the perfect summer family movie? Look no further than The Runway. This charming Irish comedy from first-time director Ian Power is based on the true story of a South American pilot who crash-landed in a small town in Ireland in the 1980s. Demian Bichir stars as Ernesto, the unlucky pilot who finds himself stranded in West Cork with precious cargo in hand. Unable to speak any English, Ernesto is at the mercy of Paco (Tff 2012 Whole Lotta Sole's Jamie Kierans), a precious nine-year-old boy whose overactive imagination and minimal knowledge of Spanish allow him to view Ernesto as a hero. Eager to help the marooned pilot after hearing Paco's inflated account of the mystery man, the eccentric townspeople come together to help Ernesto rebuild his plane. When Ernesto's story receives worldwide attention and accusers from his checkered past descend on West Cork, Paco and the villagers must defend »

Demian Bichir was a surprise Oscar nominee last year for his work in A Better Life, and a lot of moviegoers were introduced for the first time to the Mexican actor, who's also appeared on Showtime's Weeds, in Steven Soderbergh's Che, and most recently in the new Oliver Stone film Savages. But in the new comedy The Runway, which opens VOD on July 18 and in select theaters on July 20, audiences get to see a lighter side of Bichir, playing a Colombian pilot who, unable to speak a word of English, accidentally crash lands in a small Irish village. In this exclusive clip we're premiering below, Bichir's character Ernesto is introduced to the village by Paco, the young boy who is the only person in town who speaks Spanish and becomes Ernesto's translator. Demian Bichir Does Comedy In The Runway Trailer

11 July 2012 7:23 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

After decades of plugging away with a variety of film and television productions, Mexico-born actor Demián Bichir broke through last winter with A Better Life. Most of the indie drama's success can be attributed solely to Bichir's subtle yet exquisite performance as a hardworking Mexican gardener trying to build opportunities for his son in East L.A., while avoiding the notice of immigration agents who could deport him. The resounding praise for his portrayal culminated in his first Oscar nomination, pitting him against such A-listers as Brad Pitt (Moneyball), George Clooney (The Descendants) and Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). Though he didn't win that night, Bichir has since won the notice of Hollywood, and with that kind of attention comes the re-emergence of older films that can now get traction thanks to the star's involvement. Lucky for Bichir, in his case this feature is only The Runway, a »
