Ol' Man Ribber
15 February 2015 | by (London, England) – See all my reviews

The experimental works of J. B. Priestly have been well documented and though this is not a 'time' play in the strictest sense of the word it is definitely in the tradition of Time And The Conways, Dangerous Corner, I Have Been Here Before, An Inspector Calls etc and more than up to the high standard of these other titles. Some quarter of a century after creating the role on the London stage Ralph Richardson reprises the eponymous Jordan for television and does so magnificently, reducing the fine supporting cast to mere marionettes. Whether or not one subscribes to the idea of a person (presumably a soul in human form) temporarily halted in limbo whilst revisiting episodes of his life are revisited is really neither here nor there; what matters is whether or not Richardson can MAKE us believe it and the answer is an overwhelming Yes. It was shown as part of a short season of 'lost' television plays and is therefore unlikely to surface again. A great pity.
