Stars React to the Tiger Woods Headlines

10 December 2009 7:40 AM, PST | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

"The Insider" has the latest... As stars like Gilles Marini, Melissa Joan Hart and Paris Hilton stepped out in Hollywood to celebrate a new clothing line, they talked about the hottest topic making headlines: Tiger Woods. "I wish for his sake it had been kept private," Hart said while attending a party at Kitson to celebrate the Fraggle Rock clothing and costume jewlery line. "He really was an American hero because not only does he have amazing talent that he just continues to improve and improve, he was this all-American family man with only good values and he was a classy guy and that went right out the window when this hit the wind. We put him on a pedestal and I wish he would have stayed there." "I'd say that he should stay with his beautiful wife and children," Hilton says. "I don't really pay attention to other people's »

TNT picks up 'Dark Blue' for Season 2

8 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

TNT has picked up freshman drama "Dark Blue" for a second season.

The network has ordered 10 more episodes of the cop drama starring Dylan McDermott and executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Warner Horizon-produced "Dark Blue" joins another recently renewed freshman TNT series, the Jada Pinkett Smith-starring medical drama "Hawthorne."

Both have performed respectably but have not become out-of-the gate hits like "The Closer."

"Dark Blue," which will return next year, will be joined by another gritty cop drama, "Southland," which will make its debut on TNT in January, following a midseason run on NBC.

The news of "Dark Blue'"s renewal comes on the day TNT saw strong ratings for the premiere of its last new series this year, the Ray Romano starrer "Men of a Certain Age." »

Men of a Certain Age Pwns Cable

8 December 2009 11:38 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Newsflash: Middle aged men are in.  Now I feel safe admitting I'm over 40.  Ray Romano's Men of a Certain Age, a series I personally dismissed as demographically narrow but brilliant, seized the top spot in ad-supported cable premieres this year with a whopping 5.4 million viewers.  Now, the segmentation shows what one would reasonably expect: almost half of those viewers fit in the 25-54 age range.  Yup, and you can bet that two other statistics aren't going to be discussed, despite the huge overall number:  the concentration of males, and the concentration in the upper end of that spread.  But really, who cares – middle aged men need TV shows too.

Men of a Certain Age stars Romano, Andre Braugher, and Scott Bakula as a tight knit trio of friends dealing with advancing age and all the typically amusing ways we males tend to resist it.  The humor is un-apologetically targeted »

TNT bangs the gavel on Raising the Bar

30 November 2009 6:42 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

TNT canceled the Steven Bochco legal drama "Raising the Bar," starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Gloria Reuben and Jane Kaczmarek. The legal drama began strong, but the sophomore ratings slump was too steep, almost half the audience tuned it from the first season numbers. According to E! there are three unaired episodes of the series that TNT will air possibly in March 2010. TNT scooped up the drama "Southland" and also renewed Jada Pinkett Smith's medical drama "Hawthorne" and the fast-paced Tim Hutton starring dramedy "Leverage." Kyra Sedgwick's The Closer's renewal is still Tba as is the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced cop drama "Dark Blue," starring Dylan McDermott. »

‘The Bannen Way’ Set Visit: Ironside, Jaguars and REDs

9 October 2009 11:27 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

I woke up Sunday morning, slid into my skinny jeans, a low-cut, tight black shirt, and stilettos; and slipped on a pair of shades. There's something about going to visit the set of a series that has been labeled "slick," "sexy," and "dangerous" that just makes a gal want to look good...even at 7:00 a.m. And just why was I dragging myself out of bed at such a god-awful hour on a weekend? To get a first-hand glimpse of the shooting of The Bannen Way, the highly anticipated new web series from Sony Pictures Television set to debut on Crackle.com this January. In case you missed the story: Jesse Warren and Mark Gantt debuted the trailer last August, the cybersphere went wild over the racy action series, Icm signed the duo and then Sony snatched up the project based on the strength of the trailer and the scripts the pair had written. »

'Hawthorne' shifts change for twosome

24 September 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

"Hawthorne" executive producer Glen Mazzara has been named showrunner for the upcoming second season of the TNT medical drama starring Jada Pinkett Smith.

The series' creator/executive producer John Masius, who ran the first season, will continue on the Sony TV-produced show as exec producer.

The move was initiated by Masius, who wants to focus on writing, the part of making a TV show that he enjoys the most and that has earned him nine Emmy nominations and two wins. He will continue to be involved in the oversight of the series with Mazzara.

Before joining "Hawthorne," Mazzara served as executive producer/showrunner on the first season of Starz's drama series "Crash."

Along with Adam Fierro, Mazzara was recently hired by Columbia to write a sequel to the Will Smith-starring "Hancock."

Mazzara, whose series credits also include "The Shield" and "Life," is repped by CAA. »

Jada Pinkett Smith: ‘Family is Number One’

Kevin Winter/Getty Actress and songstress Jada Pinkett Smith, 37, wears many hats, but there is one hat which clearly suits her best. “Family is number one,” she tells the September issue of Good Housekeeping magazine. “I figure out how I can give them what they need, and in turn be given the time to do what I want.” To that end, when she was mulling over the idea of joining the cast of HawthoRNe, Jada says that it was the input of Jaden Christopher Syre, 11, and Willow Camille Reign, 8 ½, she sought above all others.

“I sat my kids down and said, ‘There’s a project that Mommy wants to do,’” she recalls, “‘It’s going to be three months, and there might be days that I’m not going to be here when you wake up or when you go to bed. But then I might have two days off, »

Summer television gets cable boost

26 August 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Although you wouldn't know it from following broadcast network ratings, summer TV viewing is at an all-time high.

According to a Turner research report, the average person watched 32.2 hours of TV per week this summer. In 2004, the average number of TV hours viewed during the summer was 29.8.

The gains were driven by cable TV programming, which continues to erode the traditional advantage of the Big Four networks.

Among new series on ad-supported cable, the most-watched programs were USA's "Royal Pains" (averaging 7.2 million viewers), Syfy's "Warehouse 13" (4 million), TNT's "Hawthorne" (3.9 million), TNT's "Dark Blue" (3.4 million) and Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva" (3 million).

The most-watched returning shows were TNT's "The Closer" (7.9 million) and four on USA: "Burn Notice" (7.7 million), "Monk" (5.6 million), "In Plain Sight" (5.1 million) and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (4.6 million).

Turner research head Jack Wakshlag said cable networks programming more original content than ever combined with the digital transition helped boost the number. »

Jada Pinkett Smith gets good news about "HawthoRNe"

11 August 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

First off, I love Jada Pinkett Smith.

I mean, please. She is nothing short of hot. And her portrayal of lesbian Alex Fisher was just about the only thing worth watching in The Women.

But her show, HawthoRNe, is not so hot.

I tried to love it, I really did. I want to support a series with a strong female lead, especially when that woman happens to be an over-40 woman of color. The fact that Smith is gorgeous is just a bonus.

Unfortunately, HawthoRNe just isn’t all that interesting. Maybe I’m unfairly comparing Smith’s Christina Hawthorne, chief nursing officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, to Edie Falco’s Nurse Jackie. But Christina seems too valiant and heroic — too perfect. And that’s kind of boring.

Many critics share my opinion but, luckily for Smith and the rest of the HawthoRNe cast, TNT apparently does not. Today the »

Hawthorne Gets a Season Two

10 August 2009 6:10 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Despite very negative reviews, TNT has renewed fledgling medical drama Hawthorne for a second season. The show, starring Jada Pinkett-Smith as Christina Hawthorne, a Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, will air the penultimate episode of its first season tomorrow night.

The show, one of TNT's nine current original shows, three of which started this year, has been recieved poorly by critics. The Boston Herald called the show "a mess," and the New York Post called the cast "flat and one-dimensional." It's been continually called "weakly written," and "unconvincing"  by many critics, and the titular protagonist has been criticized for being too much of an advocate. "She can’t always be in an uproar about everything or always play the hero. The show cannot center around her at the expense of everyone else," said Amy Amatangelo of Zap2it.

All that criticism really makes me wonder why exactly the show was renewed. »
