“Being Mary Jane” Showrunner Erica Shelton Kodish Inks Overall Deal with CBS TV Studios

Kodish: CAA

Erica Shelton Kodish is heading back to CBS. The “Good Wife” alumna has signed a multi-year overall deal with CBS TV Studios after serving as showrunner on the fourth season of Bet’s “Being Mary Jane.” The writer-producer’s new post will see her “developing new television projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming services,” according to Hollywood’s Black Renaissance.

After kicking off her career as a story editor for “Cold Case,” Kodish moved her way up to writing and co-producing the crime series. Her other writing and producing credits include “Covert Affairs” and “Hawthorne.”

“Getting my writing career off the ground seemed insurmountable,” Kodish has said. “After graduate school a professor told me to expect it to take five to eight years to launch your career. It took every bit of that. I wanted desperately to be in a television writing room and I couldn’t even seem to land a writing assistant position. It was very difficult because others seemed to be having a much easier time of it. But I’ve learned in this business, it does you no good to compare yourself to others. None. In the end, it didn’t really matter that it took me a little longer to get there. What matters is that I persevered. Yes, there were some who got there faster. There were others who took a lot longer, too. In hindsight, I noticed that the only people who didn’t eventually break through were the ones that gave up.”

When asked what advice she’d give to women of color pursuing a writing career, she emphasized, “It takes a village. For me, it was a patchwork of African-American writers, a tight group of women writers, women of color, and a couple key mentors who made it possible for me to have a writing career. For a Woc the challenges are steep. That’s the reason it’s important to have a network of people with whom to discuss these challenges. This group made it possible for me to persist when I was full of self-doubt or just dealing with the everyday challenges of the business.”

Kodish succeeded series creator Mara Brock Akil as showrunner of “Being Mary Jane.”

Being Mary Jane” Showrunner Erica Shelton Kodish Inks Overall Deal with CBS TV Studios was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 To Show More Of Owen’s Sister But With A New Look

According to a couple of reports out there, we’re about to see a lot more of Owen’s sister Megan Hunt in the upcoming season 14! However, she will look quite different from the Megan that we saw in a couple of the season 13 flashbacks. The reason for this is because the actress who played her Bridget Regan will not be able to continue the role due to some scheduling conflicts. She’s currently a series regular on TNT’s “The Last Ship.” So, that’s got her all tied up. Instead, we’re going to see current NBC “Timeless” actress Abigail Spencer (above right) fill the role. According to TV Line, Timeless isn’t scheduled to start filming until November 2017 so that gave her a little extra time to jump in and tackle this Megan Hunt role. According to what we were shown in the season 13 flashbacks, Megan Hunt

Exclusive: Michael Vartan Is Just Getting Started: 'I Haven't Delivered My Best Performance Yet'
“I feel like my career is just beginning.”

It’s a curious thing for Michael Vartan to say, and even he admits it’s an “odd” remark to make. At 48 years old, the actor maintains a healthy, youthful perspective about his life and career, the latter of which has spanned nearly three decades. Though he isn’t a household name, Vartan made a mark playing resident nice guys and men you’d want to take home to your parents, like CIA handler Michael Vaughn on Alias and the English teacher who fell in love with Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed.

“For the first part of my career, I’ve really been an insecure actor. I’ve really struggled to find ways to be good,” Vartan reflects over the phone one early February morning, graciously apologizing earlier for being under the weather. “As I get older, it’s not that I care less, but I really

Crush of the week: Jada Pinkett Smith

It took guts for Pinkett Smith to call out the diversity whitewash at the Oscars. Even millionaires are not totally immune to Hollywood’s wrath

For all its stars, Hollywood is still a place of underappreciated and untapped talent, with actors waiting for a perfect storm to form overhead: the right role, at the right time, catching the right audience. And then, boom, they get long-overdue attention. It’s a common story, and now it applies to Jada Pinkett Smith, whom I’ve loved for a very long time.

Now 44, she is that cliche of a small woman: fun-sized (5ft!) and a human dynamo. She twinkles. I first saw her on A Different World, playing a college kid unafraid to hustle, and while she stayed on my radar through the 90s, it was in the unfairly overlooked Set It Off (1996) that she seared herself into my mind. As Stoney, a desperate and sort-of-reluctant bank robber,

Actors Known For Leading Roles Make Waves in Supporting Parts

When Jon Voight agreed to take the role of Mickey on Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” he was enthusiastic about being a part of a capable ensemble and didn’t give any thought to where his name might land in the credits.

“I’m a real character actor. I like stutters and limps,” says Voight, who built a career on playing leading men in films like 1969’s “Midnight Cowboy” and 1978’s “Coming Home,” for which he won an Oscar. “Every role is a character, and some of the characters are enjoyable to me because they’re so crazy. So Mickey’s perfect. I was fortunate to meet with him at this juncture.”

While some supporting actors, like “Parks and Recreation’s” Chris Pratt, enjoy their upgrade to leading man status, it’s even more common the other way around.

Voight is just one of the accomplished actors better known for playing
