- Fused in the womb, like conjoined twins, Mio and Neo have an unbreakable bond that no one can shatter. Not even their mother, who was devastated when the sisters were surgically separated. Every year she issues them increasingly sadistic challenges until there can be only one.
- Our story begins in 1991 when the young Mona meets a few years older Nicolaus at a music festival in Germany. They don't know each other's language but they develop their own - the language of love, in which they both are fluent. It also becomes their signature - they do not need words among themselves.
It does not take long before Nicolaus leaves Germany to move in with Mona in Sweden. Mona's parents disapprove because they have bigger plans for their daughter than marrying a simple techno DJ.
Nicolaus, whose parents have been dead for many years, does everything to fit in and abandons the music to get a "real job" at a sawmill in the village where he and Mona live. Mona has a lot of different jobs, but she never manages to keep any of them, and her periods of mental illness where she freaks out ultimately come more and more often. For example, she escapes to Germany to find the Nicolaus she fell in love with. Nicolaus has to run after her and prove that he is her husband. In 1999 Mona becomes pregnant, and both she and Nicolaus are so happy; love conquers all.
Mona feels so good during pregnancy; she has no periods of mental illness, and the little family is very harmonic. But when the doctors announce that she has to do an ultrasound, she finds out that they are expecting Siamese twins, and right after that, she goes into a deep depression. Nicolaus is trying to reach out to Mona's parents, but they refuse to help him with the words: We have no daughter.
When the twins are born, with their foreheads attached, Mona is a wonderful mother who loves her children above all else. She overprotects them and pours love on them. But, after a year, the health service announces that the twins must be separated to survive, and Mona becomes furious. She tries to escape with the children but is admitted to the psyche while the doctors separate the twins.
When Mona comes home again and realizes that she now has two children, she goes into psychosis. It should only be one child. She does not have the love for two. Nicolaus does everything to protect his family, and the only way he knows is to follow Mona's mood. The whole family becomes part of Mona's psychosis. With each passing year, Mona's methods for separating the twins are increasingly twisted, and with each passing year, the cohesion of the twins becomes stronger. Finally, they manage to escape, but Mona is not a mother that lets you hide. When she finds the twins, the final test remains. Now there will be only one of them left...
