‘Lawless’ is disappointingly unremarkable in nearly all respects

29 August 2012 3:14 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Lawless

Written by Nick Cave

Directed by John Hillcoat

USA, 2012

Director John Hillcoat and musician Nick Cave have collaborated numerous times since the late 1980s, from Cave having starred in Ghosts… of the Civil Dead to composing Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Lawless marks their second collaboration involving Cave as screenwriter, following The Proposition. That outback-set western was a film of strong lyricism and a blistering atmosphere. Like The Proposition, Lawless concerns three brothers with ties to crime and extreme violence. Unlike the 2005 film, Hillcoat’s latest is an unusually flat affair and lacking in any of the director’s usually reliable boldness regarding harsh, brutal content.

Adapted from Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest County in the World, Lawless concerns the Bondurant brothers in the Prohibition era, who set up a racket running moonshine out of the Virginia mountains. While their fellow bootleggers pay the »

Airborne Veers Off-Course: A Movie Review

*here be some spoilers. Director: Dominic Burns. Writer: Paul Chronnell. Cast: Mark Hamill, Craig Conway, Billy Murray, Sebastian Street, Simon Phillips, Julian Glover, Alan Ford, Gemma Atkinson, Rita Ramnani, and Andrew Shim. Chelsea Films is releasing Airborne across the United Kingdom on DVD July 30th. This is a film that puts a dozen passengers on a doomed flight across the Atlantic. One of their passengers is an ancient Chinese spirit that likes to possess the living. The other flight crew and trapped passengers are understandably shook up when the ghost of Chang starts offing characters via gory suicides. The action is almost laughable as the plot of a cursed vase threatens to ground this aircraft for good. And, something strange begins to happen as you watch this film. If you are a United Kingdom film fan, then you might notice that director Dominic Burns has recruited a few familiar faces. »

DVD Review - Airborne (2012)

23 July 2012 5:35 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Airborne, 2012.

Directed by Dominic Burns.

Starring Mark Hamill, Craig Conway, Billy Murray, Sebastian Street, Simon Phillips, Alan Ford, Julian Glover, Gemma Atkinson and Rita Ramnani.

Synopsis:

Hell literally breaks loose on board a Trans-Atlantic flight when an ancient evil is unleashed at 30,000 feet.

Direct-to-dvd director Dominic Burns is back with another low budget direct-to-dvd affair in the form of airplane based thriller-come-supernatural-movie Airborne.

I’ve always been a fan of closed environment thrillers. Films like The Hole and 2010’s Buried have always impressed me from a) a story telling standpoint and b) in terms of filmmaking. It takes a great level of skill to make a feature length movie set predominantly in one location that can grasp an audience to make sure they don’t fall asleep before the credits roll. To Airborne’s credit, it does come very close but it falls under the weight of trying to cram »

Exclusive: Jason Mewes & Roxanne Pallett to Lead UK Horror Devil’s Tower

22 July 2012 4:47 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Here’s a rather nice exclusive to start the week as we can announce that Jason Mewes and Roxanne Pallett are to co-lead the forthcoming horror film, Devil’s Tower, currently shooting in Derbyshire.

You’ll know Mewes from his brilliant work in Kevin Smith’s films from the View Askewniverse and Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and seeing him take a leading role in a British movie is a very interesting move.

Pallett has been a long-standing star of Emmerdale, and most recently appeared in the BBC’s Waterloo Road, and this should be a great role for her to break through on the big screen.

Starring alongside them will be the Tony Award-winning Frances Ruffelle (Les Misérables), Jessica Jane Clement (The Real Hustle), Peter Barrett (UFO, Jack Falls), Jazz Lintott (UFO, Airborne), and Emma Buckley (How to Stop Being a Loser), in her first principal role.

Paul Tanter, the writer/producer/director behind the Jack Says trilogy and new film The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan, talks to Flickering Myth’s Luke Graham about breaking into the industry, making movies and violence in films...

Luke Graham: Hi Paul, thanks for agreeing to answer a few questions. I saw The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan a few days ago and I really enjoyed it, it was great! Can I first ask, how did you break into making films and what is your background?

Paul Tanter: Many years ago, Rita Ramnani was attached to a film in pre-production, and the script needed some re-working from someone new. We were friends from university and she recommended me as someone who could give the job a fair go – as I’d always been involved in writing stuff at uni. She put me in contact with the producer, »

Efron leaves his comfort zone in The Paperboy

24 May 2012 9:52 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Zac Efron felt uncomfortable filming his revealing role The Paperboy - and he says that's the way he wanted it.

The High School Musical actor has moved into decidedly grown-up territory with the film by Precious director Lee Daniels, which screened Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival.

It's a swampy slice of Southern gothic set in the 1960s, with Efron as an aspiring writer helping his journalist brother (Matthew McConaughey) investigate a possible miscarriage of justice. Efron's Jack falls for Nicole Kidman's sparky but sultry femme fatale, who is in turn obsessed with a death row inmate (a supremely creepy John Cusack). »

"This should be deep enough for that Brothers & Sisters: Thanksgiving Reunion script they sent me."

After last week's fun but needless flashback episode, Reven8e gets right back into the thick of things, as Emily is hellbent on finding the White-Haired Man, and tragedy brings her and Jack together.

Emily has been tracking the action in Conrad's office, and overhears him tell Daniel that they need to "tie up loose ends," namely getting Jack to adhere to his story about what happened that night at the beach. Daniel tells him not to worry, because he "has a plan" when it comes to dealing with Jack.

Emily (and Nolan, who's also watching) are nervous about what means, especially since Emily is no longer sure how far Daniel is willing to go now that the Evil Grayson DNA has kicked in. She has bigger fish to fry, though, when Conrad is paid »
