Thrack, Splat, Sizzle
13 June 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Major episode of the short-lived slasher series, Harper's Island, details the past and current events surrounding Sheriff Charlie Mills, his daughter Abby, and the Wakefield murders. Also, Trish has said she will not marry Henry ever because when she looks at him, her Daddy's face appears. Always a reminder of that horrifying slaying before her eyes, Trish will never fully recover from this tragedy, and her wedding to Henry is the casualty. JD is considered the top suspect in the murder of Uncle Marty as the victim's phone is found in the troubled young man's inn room. This episode sees the end of Malcolm's tryst with the luggage of blood money, his secret involving the death of Booth is also admitted to his friends who were told (by Malcolm) their friend had skipped with said money. Malcolm's fate as he burns the money in the inn basement furnace reassures the viewer that the soon-arrested JD is in fact not the murderer.

"Thrack, Splat, Sizzle" further questions Sheriff Mills as the burn-faced man reveals himself to be a former deputy ordered to beat up Wakefield. This man tells Abby that her father is a liar and to ask him about certain facts regarding her mother and Wakefield. The fact that the two of them once were an item, that Wakefield had returned to see mom, and that his ultimate revenge against Charlie and her was the tree murder that ended her life. So Abby, as of now, believes that Charlie was just looking out for her best interests by keeping the relationship hidden, sending her away from the island, and keeping her away as long as he could. Abby convinces Trish to say goodbye to Daddy Wellington, Richard is missing so wife Shea is concerned, and daughter Madison is given a letter that leads her to a room where a door shuts behind her as the screen fades to black with a loud thud. Lots going on, for sure, but Henry's helping Charlie catch JD really places him in a precarious place because we know he isn't the killer so when another death occurs, the brotherly relationship will certainly be severed forever; I sure can't see JD forgiving him.

Flashbacks show a potential "camping trip" between Abby and fisherman boyfriend Jimmy disrupted by a yacht explosion possibly caused by Wakefield, Abby and her mother discussing Jimmy, Abby finding her mother hanging from the death tree, Abby nearly caught by the killer who uses a spade to murder a begging male victim (Jimmy saves the day by distracting the killer with his truck), and Abby confronting her father about mother's death (and his alcoholism). The burn-faced deputy's scars were caused by the yacht explosion so could be involved in the grand scheme of things...

Questions abound: who would want to harm Malcolm, what happened to Madison, and does Sheriff Charlie Mills have secrets kept from Abby involving himself and Wakefield concerning the murders? And, ultimately, is this the end of the romance between Trish and Henry?
