Quotes

David Fricke: The impact of that sound on radio, that very fat guitar that, you know, Clapton had at that point, Jack's bass was actually very rubbery, very... very elastic, it almost ping-ponged, it bounced, inside the performances. And Ginger's drumming was not... he wasn't playing straight 4/4s. You know, a lot of the action in his drumming was on the toms. It was on the cymbals, it was on everything around the snare. He was all over the kit, but he was all over the kit with incredible discipline.

This is a pretty good account of how Disraeli Gears (and The Cream) came to be. Like many of their fellow contemporary musicians, Clapton, Bruce and Baker started out as a blues outfit, but then came psychedelia and their music took a turn for the ... I don't know - better? Certainly different.

Disraeli Gears was the first vinyl album I bought back in 1967 with my 15th birthday money. My mum had seen them on a late night documentary on the BBC and was impressed enough to recommend it. And the guy in the record shop said that Disraeli Gears was a better LP than Fresh Cream. So that was how I got into what became known as Progressive Rock ...

This documentary will mean more to you if you know the album, but is also a pretty good introduction to The Cream if you're not familiar with what they did.

Only thing is - IMDb gives the running time as 96 minutes. The version I saw on Sky Arts HD ran just 49 minutes. Maybe there's alternate versions. Or maybe it's just a mistake. Does anyone have a 96 minute version?
