On the day the Confederate surrender scene was being filmed, hundreds of extras dressed as Union and Confederate soldiers stood facing each other across a grassy field primed for battle. While waiting for the director to call "Action!", the Union ranks suddenly shouted the totally impromptu battle cry "Tastes Great!", to which the entire Confederate army immediately replied "Less Filling!".
