Learn more- Has one bad Apple (co-founder) spoiled the whole darn bunch on "Dancing with the Stars"? The judges sure seemed to think so on Monday night when they put Steve Wozniak at the bottom -- way at the bottom -- of their leaderboard. With 10 points (not from any one judge, but total!), "The Woz" had a lot of ground to make up at the hands of the voters if he hoped to dig his way out of that one. His 10 (again, total) was the lowest score received by any dancer in six seasons.
Here's a quick look at the leaderboard after Monday night's performances:
Shawn & Mark: 27
Gilles & Cheryl: 27
Melissa & Tony: 27
Lil Kim & Derek: 25
David & Kym: 24
Chuck & Julianne: 23
Ty & Chelsie: 23
Lawrence & Edyta: 20
Holly & Dmitry: 17
Denise & Maksim: 16
Steve-O & Lacey: 15
Steve & Karina: 10
To the results: In no particular order, host Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris let four couples off the hook with a pass to next week: Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani; Gilles Marini & Cheryl Burke; Shawn Johnson & Mark Ballas; and ... Steve Wozniak & Karina Smirnoff!
A huge upset just nine minutes into the show as "The Woz" overcame the biggest deficit imaginable. Karina jumped and squealed and hugged Steve, who looked completely stunned.
"I'm more shocked than any time in my life other than when I got served with divorce papers," Steve said backstage.
Then there were four more: Another four couples were sent to safety: Lawrence Taylor & Edyta Sliwinska; David Alan Grier & Kym Johnson; Chuck Wicks & Julianne Hough; and Lil Kim & Derek Hough.
Cloris is back!: Relax, judges. Comedian Cloris Leachman and her partner from last season Corky Ballas paired up for a recorded segment introducing next week's dances, the Lindy Hop and the Argentine Tango.
Karina's a 'Maneater': In one of the most fun pro dances of the season, Hall & Oates played "Maneater" as Karina and three of the guys, including her real-life beau Maksim Chmerkovskiy, all vied for her affection. In the end, she pushed aside the others in favor of Maks, which Bergeron called "good casting."
'Chasing Pavement': Recent Grammy winner Adele came on to perform her popular single, "Chasing Pavement," as Alec Mazo paid a visit to dance with Edyta.
The Dance-Off: After a taped bit about how the thought of the Dance-Off is stressful, but gives the dancers a second chance to impress the judges. It's do or die.
With four couples left, it was time to determine which two remaining couples were safe and which two would be in the Dance-Off.
Tom told Steve-O & Lacey they were safe.
Holly Madison & Dmitry Chaplin were in the bottom two.
Ty Murray & Chelsie Hightower were safe, which meant Denise Richards & Maks were in the Dance-Off.
Denise & Maks and Holly & Dmitry stood in the middle of the dance floor awaiting their chance to make up their bad performances with the judges.
Holly & Dmitry: They practiced their samba knowing that there was a chance they'd be in the bottom two. Did it work? Len Goodman said Holly "came out really hot tonight" and she "came out in partied." He pointed out one little slip. Bruno Tonioli said the timing left a little bit to be desired and told her to listen to the music and attack it. Carrie Ann Inaba praised Holly's party atmosphere and for keeping her foot on the ground. Score: 6, 6, and 6. Total: 18 -- one point higher than Monday's score.
Denise & Maks: Bruno called Denise and Maks' performance on Monday a step in the wrong direction. They, too, practiced Tuesday morning because Denise was virtually positive they'd be in the bottom two. Bruno said he could not believe how much she improved from Monday night. He did say she tended to disconnect in the middle of the performance. Carrie Ann told Denise "you're good under pressure." She appreciated that Denise worked on her performance. Len said the Dance-Off gives an opportunity to prove you deserve to stay, "and in my opinion, tonight, you do." Scores: 6, 7, and 7. Total: 20 -- four points higher than Monday.
The judges' new scores would be combined with the voters' results to determine who was going home.
After the commercial break, Tom announced that the couple with the lowest combined total was ... Denise & Maks.
