We first came across word of Baran Bo Odar's The Silence (Das Letzte Schweigen) back in February. Immediately drawn in by the atmosphere of the German language trailer this seemed to be the arrival of a significant new talent, a gut feeling borne out when I had the chance to see the completed film a few months later. And now with the picture being presented at the Locarno Film Festival we have the chance to present an English subtitled version of the trailer so that you can get a better sense of what's happening.

Mmm, very nice indeed. Baran Bo Odar's Das Letzte Schweigen not only continues the odd trend of Danish actors appearing in German thrillers - Mads Mikkelsen in The Door, Ulrich Thomsen in this one - but also just plain impresses with its impeccable atmosphere and slowly building dread.
With a story revolving around kidnappings and killings of young girls over a span of decades it's hard not to compare to recent UK effort Red Riding but this looks to go far more for arthouse chills than Red Riding's crime-noir vibe. Here's the synopsis from the IMDb:
