"VOICE" is about a group of 5 medical students attending a forensic medicine seminar. Their task is to listen to the "voices" of the dead and convey their final words to the deceased's family.
The main character, Daiki, is an inquiring mind, always asking "why this?" and "why that?", and no detail slips his attention. With his analytical thinking and vivid imagination, he connects the pieces of the puzzle and unveils the truth. The other 4 students are Ryosuke, who is the son of a very successful doctor but struggles to find his own path, Aki-chan, the bright, hardworking student, whose own family's tragedy led her to pursue forensic medicine, Hanei-kun, the ex-gang member, and the more reserved Teppei-kun.
At first I thought this would be somewhat similar to "Bones", but it turned out completely different. The cases the students have to deal with are mostly ambiguous accidents, not murders. Despite death having a key role in the plot, the overall atmosphere of the show is quite light and optimistic. And there are also lots of funny moments. And I'm talking laugh-out-loud funny. Daiki over-analyzing every single thing, from mayonnaise to sneezing, is hilarious.
There are some faults when it comes to the laboratory setting, like not always using gloves while handling medical samples, or picking up contaminated broken glass with bare hands, etc. It didn't really matter though, because the show doesn't focus so much on the medical procedures.
This show is unique, it can be funny and it can be serious. I was lucky to have discovered this, it was a joy to watch.
