Rudi and Helena escape from a long procession of Jews being marched into Babi Yar. They are eventually rescued from a hayloft by a group of Jewish partisans. Erik Dorf attends a top-level Nazi conference in which Heydrich gives Hilter's orders of the final solution for all the Jews in Europe. Karl Weiss has been transferred to Theresienstadt concentration camp which the Germans use to display to the Red Cross officials and representatives of neutral countries that Jews are being treated kindly. Did You Know?

Halfway through the mini-series, Hans Helms is shown transferred into the SS from the regular German military as punishment for sleeping on watch. This would never have happened in the actual German Army, since SS personnel (especially those assigned to death squads on the eastern front) were independently raised from security police formations; a Wehrmacht soldier would never have been transferred into such a unit as a means of punishment. A fine continuation to the excellent mini-series.

You may want to note that although the show was listed as occurring in four episodes, on the DVDs, they are actually five. So, a tiny portion of the prior episode actually was included in episode three when the show originally aired.

This episode's theme is the liquidation of the Jews. It begins with death squads very inefficiently rounding up Jews on the Eastern Front and killing them. However, Himmler and the other scum who ran the SS demand it be done on a larger scale and more humanely. So, they did experiments with carbon monoxide and the main character featured in this episode is Dorf. In addition, much of the show is about Rudi and his girlfriend--their lives together once they joined the partisans as well as their marriage. While only occupying a tiny portion of the show, Karl is transferred to Theresienstadt and the Dr. and Mrs. Weiss continue their lives in the ghetto.

Once again, this is a brilliant episode of an amazing mini-series. Finely acted and written.
