After his mother's death KK (Kai Koss) returns to his home town to settle her affairs. He has been away for 19 years trying to escape and forget about his mother's cruel treatment of him. He soon realizes that you can't outrun your past. He pulls over the side of the road and begins reminincing 19 yrs ago when he first left as an adolescent, and WHY. The film revolves around two boys, unknown to one another, yet a tragic accident brings them 2gether.
The night of the accident was the night KK finally attempted to escape his mother's abuse and was running thru the woods. At the same time Peter's parents had pulled over to the side of the road for their young son to take a leak. While running from his evileen mother, KK darts out the forest & onto a narrow road in front of a mack truck. The truck misses him but hits the car Peter's parents are sitting in. After jumping out of the trucks way, KK becomes devastated realizing he caused the accident and he and Peter's eyes meet across the trees in darkness except for the car's headlights. Poor Peter stands there traumatize as the flames eat away at his parents bodies. KK than proceeds to escape his mother. Years later he returns to deal w/ his evileen mother's death and raggedy, deteriorating house. He had suppressed most of what happen that night which is the plot of the movie. It's up to us to figure what and why by watching him try to figure what and why when he returned. What it all boils down to at the end & he fianlly remembers ...is just when he jumped back in the woods out of the trucks way and stood there staring at Peter staring at his parents in the burning car, he witnessed evileen (his mother), give up chasing him to grab Peter as if to help him. But he knew now that he ran away she had another child to mentally & physically torment. She than threw his shoes by a huge waterfall to make the police think he ran off the cliff in the dark, than held young Peter captive for years. KK sees the shoes and realizes the shoe strings are tied exactly the way his mother taught him to tie his shoes. Than he remembers in the forest, his evil mother had knelt down to help Peter tie his shoes while pretending to console him. The fact that KK caused the death of this missing boy's parents and ruined Peter's life was secondary to the fact that even worse...he kept his mouth shut about the missing boy's where abouts AND didn't bother to go back to rescue Peter from his sick, abusive mother after all these yrs. The ending was a self-righteous one which is why he thought murdering Peter would be a better alternative than to let Peter suffer any longer in the state his evil mother left him in, nor would Peter have to pay for his monstrous crimes w/ the police so close to realizing he still lives. With all this in play, it would also free KK from any guilt he suffered at having a hand, along w/ his mother, at ruining poor, poor Peters entire life. By Adele Hiona, (the city by the bay, SF)
