Plot Synopsis
This Wallander episode, The Guilt, continues the traditions of the series. Wallander is not your typical movie detective and neither are the crimes or the criminals, at least not usually and not up to now. Most American detective stories revolve around career criminals, and the police or private detectives play a very active role in figuring things out, often using questionable methods. Many Wallander episodes involve more ordinary people who, for personal motivations, commit one-off crimes.
Wallander is the leader of a team. The teamwork helps solve the crimes. Wallander is oft-times quite passive or stymied, awaiting clues. They come in various forms such as forensics. The pieces start to fall into place. When solid evidence is lacking, the crew sometimes goes off on tangents that later turn out to be dead ends. Suspects therefore come and then go. In Wallander, the heroes make mistakes.
In this episode, it is easy to leap to the wrong conclusion without sufficient evidence. Intuition needs some basis. It is even easier for the public to get emotional and start to persecute the innocent whom they suspect, at least that is the theme of one part of the story.
In this movie, a young boy goes missing from supervised play care. Later he is found dead. A known pedophile lives nearby, having just been released from prison. He behaves suspiciously. The playground supervisor behaves suspiciously, and do the parents and a sibling. There are a number of suspects.
For a change, I guessed who did it, too soon, I might add. That's probably a negative for this script. Still, there was ample suspense. I've reduced my rating for that reason and because I sensed that the script was more shallow than others. It had less character development. I missed Linda and Stefan, and it seems that the others were not given much in the way of meaty roles, which need not take up much screen time, in this episode.
The lead, Kristin Henriksson, continues to excel.
