Proceed and Be Bold! (2008)

A documentary film that follows the life and work of letterpress printer Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., and his socially and politically charged works of art.

1 video »

Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. is an internationally recognized printing press artist, though he would rather be referred to as a "humble negro printer." This self-proclaimed "humble (sometimes lowly) negro printer" tossed aside his corporate 9-to-5 job at AT&T with its steady income, chooses to live in extremely rural Alabama towns and goes wherever his art takes him. Amos found his calling making chipboard posters he sells inexpensively, so anyone and everyone can afford his art. His posters are socially, politically, and racially charged: with quotes from Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, and phrases like "coffee makes you black." The documentary film Proceed and Be Bold! probes Kennedy, his friends, family, and colleagues in an attempt to unravel the artist's meaning. The result is a discussion on the monetary and intrinsic values of art, the goals of an artist, the workings of race and culture, and what "the American Dream" really means. A nice reminder to go for what you want in life!

I discovered this documentary after finding Amos Paul Kennedy's letterpress posters online. Love the raised text and layers of ink only a letterpress can create! The documentary shows you even more about the art of letterpress printing... the art of text sizes and fonts, colors built upon more colors and the final message captured on the poster. Some of the messages are everyday and simple -- and some messages a bit more controversial! But more than the art, is the reminder to go for what you want in this life. PROCEED AND BE BOLD is a kick in the right direction of that road less traveled! Hope more people discover this hidden gem of a documentary.
