Gary Oldman Facts: 27 Things You (Probably) Don't Know About the British Actor

18 hours ago | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Whether or not you agree with his recent comments in Playboy, there's no denying Gary Oldman is one of the great actors of our time.

Ever since breaking out in 1986's "Sid and Nancy" as the self-destructing Sex Pistol Sid Vicious, Oldman has transformed himself from one role to the next. A true chameleon, the actor changes his voice for every part and is nearly unrecognizable in films like "True Romance" (1993) and "The Contender" (2000). Despite his enormous influence among fellow actors, Oldman shuns the spotlight and has only once been nominated for an Oscar. Oldman turns in yet another stirring performance (despite limited screen time) in this summer's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes".

From his famous ex-wife to his rejection from a prestigious drama school, here are 27 things you probably don't know about Gary Oldman.

1. Gary Oldman was born on March 21, 1958 in London, England to Kathleen Cheriton and Leonard Bertram Oldman. »

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared movie review: yes, that’s what he does

3 July 2014 8:10 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

An absurdist mock epic that is hilarious, outrageous, and completely insane. It’s like a bonkers Swedish Forrest Gump. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Rarely has a film’s title been so bold, so bald, so straightforward, so lacking in pretense, pretension, or bullshit as that of The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. To escape the dreadfully cheery imminent celebration of his 100th birthday, Allan Karlsson (Robert Gustafsson, who is actually only half that age) climbs out the window of the retirement home he was sentenced to after an unfortunate mishap with dynamite, and disappears. Not to our eyes, of course, only to those of the horrible busybodies in the home who want to limit his fun. Allan really likes blowing things up, »

‘A Most Wanted Man’ UK Trailer: Philip Seymour Hoffman On the Hunt

1 July 2014 9:40 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Judging by footage like that from the new UK theatrical preview (see above), the forthcoming A Most Wanted Man bears a resemblance to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – another recent adaptation of author John le Carré’s spy drama literature – in terms of its narrative, themes and style. Even grizzled, constantly smoking, German spy chief Günther Bachmann (played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) appears to be a chip off the same block that gave rise to Gary Oldman’s George Smiley in Tinker Tailor. Not that we’re complaining, mind you, since another dive into the chilling pool of le Carré’s realistic spy games, sounds like an enticing proposition.

The trouble in A Most Wanted Man begins when Issa Karpov (Grioriy Dobrygin) – a half-Chechen, half Russian Muslim immigrant – inexplicably shows up half-dead in Hamburg, laying claim to his father’s vast, but ...

Tom Hardy's Time Has Come, from Miller's 'Fury Road' to Gonzalez Inarritu's 'The Revenant,' with DiCaprio

30 June 2014 1:24 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Toh! has been calling out Brit Tom Hardy since "Bronson" as one of the most exciting actors working today. Hollywood casting directors too notice--Hardy landed back-to-back roles in Christopher Nolan's "Inception" and "The Dark Knight Rises" as well as "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Lawless." And Gavin O'Connor showcased him in fight film "Warrior" (see my video interview here). But it takes time for a great actor to reach audiences and become a real marquee draw. Hardy isn't a household name--yet. But anyone who tracks acting knows he has the right stuff. Make sure to check out Steven Knight’s intense man-in-a-car drama “Locke" (my interview here). Hardy's also collaborating with Knight (who created UK TV hit "Peaky Blinders") on the BBC series, "Taboo," executive produced by Ridley Scott.  Hardy's coming up in a number of films at various stages of production. »

We had a first clip for you back in January, and now this wonderfully atmospheric UK trailer. If you’re a fan of the likes of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, or The Constant Gardner, then you’re in the right place:

Check out the new TV spot, which is packed with new footage and plenty of action, below the official synopsis…

Gary Oldman Gives Publicist Nightmare Of An Interview To Playboy

24 June 2014 8:05 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Gary Oldman has had a long illustrious career. He's played everything from slimy bad guy with questionable taste in head gear (The Fifth Element) to espionage veteran (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) to Harry Potter's godfather.  But behind that veneer of austerity apparently lurks a PR nightmare. Oldman recently sat down with Playboy for an interview — you can read the whole thing here — and around page four everything starts to unravel. The spiral of terrible soundbites accelerates until I can only imagine Oldman's people were practically vibrating with the suppressed urge to body slam him to the ground with soothing whispers of "Shhhhhhh, just stop talking." "How bad could it be?" I hear you ask. Judge for yourself. Presented virtually without comment, here are the choicest bits in their full, unedited glory. "I just think political correctness is crap. Ethan Hawke lends Emma Watson a hand in first image from 'Regression'

10 June 2014 10:25 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

After making a smashing English-language debut in 2001 with "The Others," Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar hasn't been quite as busy in Hollywood as one might have hoped. He returned to Spain for his follow-up, the euthanasia-themed biopic "The Sea Inside," and picked up the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for his efforts. In 2009, he returned to international filmmaking with the Rachel Weisz-starring historical drama "Agora," an ambitious but rather turgid affair that didn't find much of an audience. Since then, things have been rather quiet -- so it's good to see the writer-director returning to genre filmmaking with the Spanish-American co-production "Regression." The film, on which principal photography has just wrapped, stars Emma Watson and Ethan Hawke in a psychological thriller -- in the literal sense. Watson plays a young woman who accuses her father ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" star David Dencik) of sexual abuse; when he admits guilt but no recollection of the abuse, »

Will Tom Hardy or Benedict Cumberbatch be Marvel's Doctor Strange?

9 June 2014 6:58 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

(Cbr)  With Scott Derrickson on board to direct "Doctor Strange," all eyes of Agamotto -- including Comic Book Resources -- are turning to potential actors to play Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme. Deadline reports that two actors on Marvel's list for the good doctor are Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch. Hardy, of course, is no stranger to comic book movies, having played Batman's enemy Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises." He's also appeared in "Inception," "This Means War," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Star Trek: Nemesis." Cumberbatch, meanwhile, was also in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and has a "Star Trek" film on his resume, "Star Trek Into Darkness." He also appeared in "The Fifth Estate," "August: Osage County" and the Oscar-winning "12 Years a Slave," and provided the voice of Smaug in the two "Hobbit" films. Doctor Strange was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and first appeared in 1963's "Strange Tales" #110. The character's civilian identity, »

Cumberbatch, Hardy Up For "Doctor Strange"?

7 June 2014 8:24 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Marvel is reportedly assembling its cast list for the upcoming "Doctor Strange" movie with Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch said to be two of the big names on it.

The project is moving along fast now since filmmaker Scott Derrickson tweeted earlier this week that he will direct the film from a script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

In the comics, the character is a self-centred New York surgeon robbed of his skills after a car accident. He soon finds his way to a healer in the Himalayas where he learned to tap into psychic powers to battle evil wizards and other wrongdoers.

The main issue with both actors is scheduling due to them already having various commitments elsewhere. Both of them starred together in 2011's "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," the 2007 telemovie "Stuart: A Life Backwards," and both have played the main villain in a "Star Trek" film. »

Marvel is moving along with their Phase Three plans, including the Dr. Strange film. Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy are at the top of Marvel’s list of people who should play the Master of the Mystic Arts, Dr. Stephen Strange.

According to Deadline, Marvel Entertainment has composed a wish-list of big-name actors who they would like to see in the title role of their planned Dr. Strange movie. Benedict Cumberbatch is high on the list, as is Tom Hardy.

Benedict Cumberbatch came on the scene with a splash due to his highly acclaimed portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on the BBC series Sherlock. He has also dived into sci-fi lore by playing that notorious bad guy Kahn Singh in Star Trek: Into Darkness, and into fantasy realms with voice-over roles in the Hobbit trilogy. He’s appeared in critically praised films such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse. »

The Casual Vacancy Miniseries Cast Announced; Michael Gambon Leads HBO/BBC’s J.K. Rowling Adaptation

Though Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is currently taking her first crack at scriptwriting by adapting her own book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for Warner Bros., another one of her works that has absolutely nothing to do with the Harry Potter world is firming up on the small screen.  The BBC and HBO are partnering on a miniseries adaptation of Rowling’s first post-Potter novel The Casual Vacancy, and now the cast has been announced for the anticipated effort.  Leading the charge is Dumbledore himself Michael Gambon, who will play Howard Mollison in the adaptation, which revolves around the lives of a number of people living in a small town who are affected by the sudden death of a town council member.  In the fight to fill the vacant seat, the various wars of the town (rich vs. poor, parents vs. teenagers, etc.) are brought to the surface. »

Though it may not have been met with the critical acclaim or sales numbers of her juggernaut Harry Potter series, British author J.K. Now, the impressive cast that the networks has pulled together for The Casual Vacancy, which will run for three one-hour episodes, has been revealed.
