BBC Films is set to produce a biopic of Cuban ballet superstar Carlos Acosta from “I, Daniel Blake” writer Paul Laverty. Germany’s The Match Factory will handle worldwide sales on the project, titled “Yuli,” and introduce it to buyers in Cannes.

Currently in pre-production, “Yuli” will see the world-renowned dancer star as himself, with two younger Cuban actors playing him at earlier stages of his life. Directed by Spanish filmmaker Iciar Bollain, it is scheduled to shoot in Havana at the end of this year. “Yuli” marks Laverty’s fourth collaboration with Bollain, a relationship that started with 2010’s “Even the Rain.”

Inspired by Acosta’s autobiography “No Way Home,” the film tells the story of his rise from the streets of Havana to the heights of classical ballet, becoming the first black principal guest dancer at the Royal Ballet in London. The film will feature eight contemporary dance »

‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’ Trailer Showcases Elisabeth Moss, Nicole Kidman

11 May 2017 12:33 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s been over four years since “Top of the Lake” closed its first case, but the Elisabeth Moss murder mystery is returning with a new crime. On Thursday, the BBC Two, BBC UKTV, and Sundance Channel co-production dropped the first trailer for Series 2, entitled “Top of the Lake: China Girl.”

“China Girl” will once again feature Moss in her Golden Globe-winning role as Kiwi cop Robin Griffin as she returns to her Sydney home, just in time to discover another gruesome murder. The trailer also gives us a look at Nicole Kidman and Gwendoline Christie in their new roles.

Top of the Lake: China Girl” also stars David Dencik (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), Alice Englert (“Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell”) and Ewen Leslie (“The Daughter”). Jane Campion returns as co-writer and co-director, while Ariel Kleiman replaces Gerard Lee as co-director from Series 1 due to scheduling conflicts.

‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’ Trailer: Elisabeth Moss and Nicole Kidman Protect Their Own in Jane Campion’s Sequel — Watch

11 May 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It’s been four years since we last saw Elisabeth Moss’ Detective Robin Griffin, and it looks like quite a bit has changed. New faces and a new case dominate the first trailer for “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” Jane Campion’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed limited series.

Moss returns as Griffin, a mother still reeling from giving up her daughter at birth, and in a disconcerting twist, Nicole Kidman plays Mary’s adoptive mother. Why does that connection spell trouble? It looks like Griffin’s gruesome new assignment links back to Mary’s new boyfriend — which doesn’t bode well for anyone, especially when he’s confidant enough to say things like, “The destiny of man is to enslave women.”

BBC Worldwide strikes £150m super-drama deal

13 April 2017 6:31 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Corporation aiming to produce more “ambitious” projects like McMafia.

BBC Worldwide has secured a £150m fund for high-end dramas after striking a deal with film financier Anton (writes Broadcast).

The commercial arm of the BBC has launched The Drama Investment Partnership with the European firm, which has financed feature films including Paddington and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The investment will be used to fund a raft of premium scripted series over a three-year period and is more akin to slate financing arrangement, which is commonplace in the film sector.

Both companies will invest in the dramas as Bbcw looks to find shows that can sell around the world, in the mould of Top of the Lake, The Honourable Woman and forthcoming series McMafia (pictured).

The two firms hope that the fund will help increase the pace and flow of “ambitious” projects from  British production companies, giving indies access to capital as soon as they receive a commission »

BBC Worldwide is partnering with Sebastien Raybaud’s Anton to create a £150 million ($190 million) fund for investment in high-end British drama with international appeal.

The Drama Investment Partnership will aim to speed up the process of bringing premium drama projects by British companies, such as upcoming series “McMafia” (pictured) and Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” into production by having funds available at the point of commission.

“With the Drama Investment Partnership, we are actively bringing new funding opportunities to the market, consistent with our history of pioneering financing and partnership deals,” Tim Davie, CEO of BBC Worldwide, said in a statement.

The fund is initially scheduled to run for three years. BBC Worldwide said it expected to greenlight a slate worth “at least £150 million” during that initial period. BBC Worldwide will select projects for development and investment to be financed through the partnership and also handle global marketing and distribution.
