"Democracy 4 Dummies" started with a borrowed camera from Concordia University when a Green Party volunteer asked filmmaker Sophia Male to film the benefit show of local Montreal Green Party candidate Dylan Perceval-Maxwell. After Sophia witnessed how funny and inspiring these young political enthusiasts were, she wanted to show other young people that it wasn't completely uncool to be political. She was also curious how parties with no money campaigned. When the Canadian election was called the night of the benefit show, she decided it would be fun to film the entire campaign of her Green Party candidate to show others how fun and silly elections could be. With no money herself, she continued using the borrowed camera until the University refused to lend it out. At that point, while helping paint her friend's apartment, she noticed he had the same camera. He agreed to lend her the camera for the duration of the film in exchange for her shooting his wedding. So the film was shot on borrowed cameras for bartered work.
