Box Office: How Tom Cruise Stays on Top

21 April 2013 10:40 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Even before Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" opened in North America on Thursday night, the 50-year-old must have been grinning his famous grin. Before the movie had sold a single ticket here, it was a surefire hit. In his native land, Cruise takes a lot of ribbing, whether for his headline-generating personal life (especially since 2005, the year of the couch-jump) or for the seeming shrinkage of his star-power (again, especially since 2005). The estimated $38.2 million "Oblivion" earned this weekend marked his biggest domestic opening since "Mission: Impossible III" seven years ago. Some will call it a comeback, others will call it a fluke or last hurrah from a middle-aged action hero desperately trying to hold on to his relevance in an industry that relentlessly moves on to the next big (young) thing. But the truth is, Cruise has been a remarkably consistent box office winner, even since he started raising eyebrows eight »

Weekend Box Office: Oblivion Takes First Place with $38.1 Million

21 April 2013 8:49 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It was the only game in town, so Oblivion’s first place finish this weekend didn’t come as a shock. Universal’s sci-fi release had a solid debut – earning an estimated $38.1 million from 3,783 locations, or just under what G.I. Joe: Retaliation managed three weeks back. Oblivion also topped its initial domestic projection of $35 million, though the real strength of the Tom Cruise vehicle is overseas.  Title Weekend Total 1.  Oblivion $38,152,000 $38.1 2.  42 $18,025,000 $54 3.  The Croods $9,500,000 $154.8 4.  Scary Movie 5 $6,296,000 $22.9 5.  G.I. Joe: Retaliation $5,775,000 $111.2 6.  The Place Beyond the Pines $4,745,888 $11.4 7.  Olympus Has Fallen $4,500,000 $88.8 8.  Evil Dead $4,100,000 $48.4 9.  Jurassic Park 3D $4,000,000 $38.4 10.  Oz the Great & Powerful $3,048,000 $223.7 Last week, we told you that Oblivion had earned $60.4 million from its international launch. Even as his star has faded at home, Tom Cruise remains a big draw internationally – as Oblivion’s new estimated $150 million global cume can attest. But it’s the film’s Us numbers that interest us today. I’ve already intimated »

Box Office: Oblivion Opens With $38.2M; Tom Cruise's Best Domestic Opening In Seven Years

21 April 2013 8:29 AM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Tom Cruise has shown that he still has it when it comes to box office clout after an impressive $38.2 million opening in North America for Oblivion this weekend. The Joseph Kosinski helmed original sci-fi movie has gone straight to the top spot after opening on Friday with a B- CinemaScore from moviegoers. What's significant about this opening is that it's higher than the combined debuts of both of the films that Cruise starred in last year; Rock of Ages ($14.4 million) and Jack Reacher ($15.2 million). This is his best since Mission Impossible 3 in 2006 which took $47 million during its opening weekend. It's overseas where Cruise mostly dominates, and Oblivion had taken over $60 million internationally leading into its Us opening. It now has a total of $71.9 million, giving it a worldwide cume of $150.2 million. It should continue to do well until Iron Man 3 opens »

Kosinski's Sci-Fier to Become Cruise's Biggest Domestic Debut Since 2006?

21 April 2013 12:55 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Kosinski's Mind-boggling Sci-Fier to Boast Cruise's Biggest Domestic Box-Office Debut Weekend Since 2006?: Tom Cruise is no longer the superstar he used to be -- well, in case you believe the United States and Canada represent the whole world. (More information on Cruise's international b.o. allure further down.) Since J.J. Abrams' thriller Mission: Impossible III back in '06, only one Cruise movie in wide release has opened with more than $25 million at the North American box office: Brad Bird's fourquel Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which brought in $29.55 million on its second weekend (and first in wide release) on Christmas weekend 2011. This weekend (April 19-21), Cruise returns to American and Canadian screens with Joseph Kosinski's "original" sci-fier Oblivion; initial (Friday) results have surpassed studio predictions and, for that matter, the predictions of most pundits. Tom Cruise’s 10 Greatest Movie Roles

20 April 2013 8:24 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

You know what’s awesome about Tom Cruise? No matter what people think of his religious affiliations, his sometimes questionable public behavior, his romantic relationships, his various eccentricities, most are still fans of his movies. He makes seriously solid movies, frequently, consistently, dependably. He’s an actor who brings it to each role he takes on, whether he’s carrying a film like Mission: Impossible or working as a bizarre supporting player like in Rock of Ages.

What may be most remarkable is his longevity, being able to handle roles that have thrown him into dangerous stunts and dramatic moments alike for 30 years now. That’s kind of hard to believe. But indeed, his first big lead role was in 1983 with Risky Business, which landed him his first Golden Globe nomination at the mere age of 21. He’s gone on to work with some of the biggest and best directors in history, »

Box Office on Cruise Control as 'Oblivion' Heads for $38M Opening

20 April 2013 8:38 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The Tom Cruise sci-fi epic "Oblivion" took in $13.2 million Friday and will easily capture the weekend box office crown. Universal's futuristic adventure, directed by Joseph Kosinski ("Tron Legacy") and co-starring Morgan Freeman, is outpacing analysts' projections and is on pace for a three-day total of $38 million. It's a solid debut for Cruise, too. The opening number is better than that of his two films from last year – "Rock of Ages" and "Jack Reacher" – combined. And it is his best since 2006's "Mission Impossible 3," which took in $47 »

'Oblivion': 5 things to know about Tom Cruise's sci-fi gamble

19 April 2013 5:29 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Tom Cruise could really use a box office hit right about now and "Oblivion" might be the film to do the trick. Already a success overseas, the sci-fi mindbender opens in the U.S. just two weeks ahead of the official summer movie season's launch with "Iron Man 3."

It's not just Cruise who could use a hit after a string of recent disappointments, but also the entire movie industry. So far the year has produced only three real hits ("Oz," "The Croods" and "Identity Thief") and a few modest overachievers ("Olympus Has Fallen," "Mama," "Safe Haven"), to say nothing of the even more troubling dearth of movies that are actually, you know, good.

The quick take on "Oblivion" is "great visuals, not-so-great story," but it's worth saying a little more about this ambitious piece of sci-fi filmmaking from director Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy").

Movie Review: Will "Oblivion" Save Tom Cruise?

19 April 2013 11:15 AM, PDT | TooFab | See recent TooFab news »

After the box office bomb that was "Rock of Ages" (which nearly lost over $20 million) and a well-publicized divorce, Tom Cruise's career seemed headed toward oblivion.Ironically, that's the title of Tom's stylish new sci-fi flick, which opens in theaters today. Thankfully, Tom returns to a role he plays best: action star."Oblivion" is set in post-apocalyptic 2077. Alien Scavengers (Scavs) destroyed the moon during their invasion. Nuclear warfare and natural disasters have ravaged Earth. Most of humankind has resettled on Jupiter's moon Titan. Only a handful of humans remain on Earth, under the protection of the Tet, a orbital space station. One of those remaining humans is Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), a sort of repairman. He's tasked with the mundane job of maintaining automated drones that protect hydrorigs, giant resource gatherers that will help mankind on Titan. His sole companion is his wife/communications officer Victoria (Andrea Riseborough), who »

'Oblivion' Reviews: Does Tom Cruise Still Have It?

19 April 2013 7:23 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Tom Cruise is banking on "Oblivion" to return him to the top of the box office heap, but critics are lukewarm on the science-fiction film. The "Top Gun" actor's film hits theaters following a series of flops like last summer's "Rock of Ages" and negative publicity surrounding the collapse of his marriage to Katie Holmes. "Oblivion" finds Cruise as one of the last remaining humans on Earth following an alien invasion. His mission is to extract the planet's remaining natural resources, before joining the rest of the survivors on Titan. Yet, Cruise's »

Oblivion (2013) – The Review

18 April 2013 8:23 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

One complaint of older film fans is that the stars of today can’t compare to those from Hollywood’s “golden age”. Modern actors appear in one type or genre of film and don’t seem to branch out. Clark Gable or Tyrone Power could go from romantic comedy to action thriller and even musicals and westerns. Well there’s one actor working today that truly attempts a variety of films, and he’s still at the top of the box office: Mr. Tom Cruise. Last year he scored with a musical comedy (Rock Of Ages) in the Summer and squeezed in an action thriller (perhaps the start of a new franchise), Jack Reacher right before Christmas. In the last few weeks before the official Summer blockbusters, he’s returned to the science fiction arena without the director that guided him in his last two Sf epics, Minority Report and »

Forecast: 'Oblivion' Gets Jump on Summer Season This Weekend

18 April 2013 3:54 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

As the Summer movie season quickly approaches, the studios are only releasing one brand-new movie*Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure Oblivion*in to theaters nationwide this weekend. While strong word-of-mouth will keep 42 in play, Oblivion has enough going for it that it should open on top with at least $30 million, which will be the highest opening weekend in April 2013.At the beginning of the new century, Tom Cruise was arguably the biggest movie star in the U.S.: from Mission: Impossible II in 2000 to Mission: Impossible III in 2006, Cruise starred in seven-straight movies that earned at least $100 million at the domestic box office. Towards the end of that run, though, Cruise's public image took a hit due to some of his more eccentric behavior and his strong association with the controversial Church of Scientology. Since 2006, Cruise has only had a single $100 million domestic earner, which was the fourth Mission: Impossible »

Quotables: Even Scientology Doesn't Want Russell Brand

"Firstly, [Cruise] is a glorious man, and is very kind and sweet. That's what you got to say if you want to continue to work in the film industry. [But I'd occasionally say] oh Tom, sometimes I feel a bit lost in life. He'd go, 'Oh, I dunno. Read the Bible. That man had no interest in getting me into Scientology at all. If there's a cult that don't want me, I wanna know why."--Russell Brand on wondering why Tom Cruise maybe doesn't want him for Scientology, but who really knows why. Maybe it's the former sex addict thing, or maybe it's the all-those-drugs thing that happened awhile back, too. Maybe it's also because Katy Perry, with her dark hair and vacant eyes, seems to be Tom's type, and maybe she shunned him sometime at some premiere of some movie. That could be it, you know, because come on. If you're in any »

Russell Brand Upset Tom Cruise Didn't Recruit Him for Scientology: "I Want to Know Why!"

Russell Brand is a little upset with Tom Cruise. The 37-year-old comedian stopped by Conan O'Brien's show this week, where he opened up about bonding—or the lack thereof—with Cruise while on the set of their 2012 flick Rock of Ages. "Firstly, he's a glorious man and he's very kind and sweet," Brand said, adding, "That's what you say if you want to continue to work in the film industry." "But I was thinking he's a member of that religion called Scientology," he continued. "I thought, 'Oh, I'm interested in that.'" Brand joked that during filming, he tried to bait Cruise into bringing up the topic of his religion. »

Russell Brand Tried To Get Tom Cruise To Recruit Him Into Scientology

Russell Brand has apparently not been invited to become a member of the Church of Scientology. He told "Conan" that he tried to get their most famous member to recruit him while they worked together on "Rock of Ages," but either his pleas fell on Tom Cruise's deaf ears, or Cruise knew better than to take him seriously.

"Every so often, I’d say thing like, ‘Tom, sometimes I’m a bit lost in life.’ See if he would try and get me," Brand told Conan O'Brien. "That man had no interest in getting me in Scientology at all." Or, as Vulture put it, "Cruise just left him hanging on a thread of fabricated despondency."

The more the comedian thought about it, the more it seemed to bother him. "If there’s a cult that don’t want me, I want to know why," he said. Maybe he can »
