Even before Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" opened in North America on Thursday night, the 50-year-old must have been grinning his famous grin. Before the movie had sold a single ticket here, it was a surefire hit. In his native land, Cruise takes a lot of ribbing, whether for his headline-generating personal life (especially since 2005, the year of the couch-jump) or for the seeming shrinkage of his star-power (again, especially since 2005). The estimated $38.2 million "Oblivion" earned this weekend marked his biggest domestic opening since "Mission: Impossible III" seven years ago. Tom Cruise has shown that he still has it when it comes to box office clout after an impressive $38.2 million opening in North America for Oblivion this weekend. The Joseph Kosinski helmed original sci-fi movie has gone straight to the top spot after opening on Friday with a B- CinemaScore from moviegoers. What's significant about this opening is that it's higher than the combined debuts of both of the films that Cruise starred in last year; Rock of Ages ($14.4 million) and Jack Reacher ($15.2 million). This is his best since Mission Impossible 3 in 2006 which took $47 million during its opening weekend. It's overseas where Cruise mostly dominates, and Oblivion had taken over $60 million internationally leading into its Us opening. Kosinski's Mind-boggling Sci-Fier to Boast Cruise's Biggest Domestic Box-Office Debut Weekend Since 2006?: Tom Cruise is no longer the superstar he used to be -- well, in case you believe the United States and Canada represent the whole world. You know what’s awesome about Tom Cruise? No matter what people think of his religious affiliations, his sometimes questionable public behavior, his romantic relationships, his various eccentricities, most are still fans of his movies. Tom Cruise could really use a box office hit right about now and "Oblivion" might be the film to do the trick. Already a success overseas, the sci-fi mindbender opens in the U.S. just two weeks ahead of the official summer movie season's launch with "Iron Man 3."
It's not just Cruise who could use a hit after a string of recent disappointments, but also the entire movie industry. So far the year has produced only three real hits ("Oz," "The Croods" and "Identity Thief") and a few modest overachievers ("Olympus Has Fallen," "Mama," "Safe Haven"), to say nothing of the even more troubling dearth of movies that are actually, you know, good.
The quick take on "Oblivion" is "great visuals, not-so-great story," but it's worth saying a little more about this ambitious piece of sci-fi filmmaking from director Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy").

Russell Brand has apparently not been invited to become a member of the Church of Scientology. He told "Conan" that he tried to get their most famous member to recruit him while they worked together on "Rock of Ages," but either his pleas fell on Tom Cruise's deaf ears, or Cruise knew better than to take him seriously.
"Every so often, I’d say thing like, ‘Tom, sometimes I’m a bit lost in life.’ See if he would try and get me," Brand told Conan O'Brien. "That man had no interest in getting me in Scientology at all." Or, as Vulture put it, "Cruise just left him hanging on a thread of fabricated despondency."
