Fox has announced the first casting for its upcoming Grease live musical, with Julianna Hough (Rock of Ages) set to portray Sandy Olsson and Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) securing the role of Rizzo.

“Grease is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer, and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy,” states Hough (via EW). “My siblings and I watched it and played it out over and over when we were kids. This is my dream role and performing it live on television will be one of the most thrilling opportunities I’ve had in my career so far.”

“Being Rizzo is something I’ve never imagined, and I love that because it will be a new challenge,” adds Hudgens. “She is such an iconic character that continues to transcend generations. I cannot wait to bring her to life on live television. »

Fox Plans "Grease" Musical, NBC On "Pan" Flop

NBC had huge success with "The Sound of Music Live" two years ago, pulling 18.5 million viewers for the one-off event. Yet while many know "The Sound of Music" off by heart, inexplicably the network chose the far less popular or even known stage musical version of "Peter Pan" for a follow-up.

Understandably, the ratings fell with just 9.1 million viewers tuning in for that broadcast. At the TCA Winter Tour presentation this week, NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt put the blame for the failure on the lack of star power and the lack of awareness of "Peter Pan" as a stage musical. They also suggested either "The Wiz" or "The Music Man" for their next attempt.

If there's one musical movie as ubiquitous and well-known as "The Sound of Music" though, it's "Grease" and Fox announced plans today for a live television production of "Grease: The Musical". The broadcast plans to »

Just a day after NBC announced that the network's next live musical will either be The Music Man or The Wiz, Fox revealed at their Television Critics Association panel Saturday that they too will enter the live musical arena in January 2016 with a "re-imagining" of the Fifties' rock n' roll musical Grease.

Julianne Hough will fill the Olivia Newton-John role of Sandy in what executive producer Marc Platt called "a shared entertainment event suited for today's audience," while Vanessa Hudgens will don the character Rizzo's Pink Ladies jacket, Entertainment Weekly reports. »

Ranked: How superhero stars fared after giving up the cape

10 January 2015 1:30 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Donning the cape and tights to play a big screen superhero was often seen as career suicide for actors. This idea is mined to brilliant effect in Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman, with a former comic book star looking to relaunch his career with an ambitious Broadway play.

Adding extra spice to Birdman is the casting of Michael Keaton, himself a former Batman whose post-tights career has been somewhat hit and miss. This film, however, is a stunning reminder of just how good an actor Keaton is and proof that careers don't end when on-screen superpowers fade away.

Digital Spy takes a look at 20 ex-superhero stars to see how they fared after leaving an iconic comic book role behind.
