- a small little unnamed boy with a striped beanie on his head and a striped red shirt lives at his house in a seaside town near a harbour. on one morning he is about to eat his toast with jam when he hears the doorbell ring, and finds an unexpected visitor, a small penguin. He thinks that the penguin is lost and lets it in. The penguin is very curious and is interested in the music from his radio, but the boy doesn't want to let the penguin have his radio and decides to go to the lost and found centre to get it back to its home. The manager gets out his folder of lost items but no one was missing a penguin, so the boy instead decides to give the penguin to the pet store, thinking the pet store might be missing him. but soon decides not to.
He looks in the library for information about penguins, he discovers that penguins come from the Southern Pole and that he can be able to get there by boat. Unfortunately the penguin makes a mess in the library and the librarian falls into it, displeased, he asks them to leave. The boy then goes to the harbour and asks a huge boat if it can take the penguin to the Pole, but he cannot be seen by those on the boat nor is his voice heard. so he decides to take it to the Pole himself.
The boy mends a row boat he finds in his bedroom wardrobe and takes it to the harbour the next morning, after seeing a lot of yellow rubber ducks in the water, almost drowning and getting wiped out in a storm and encountering a giant octopus. They finally make it to the South Pole and the boy leaves the penguin there with an umbrella and leaves. But soon the boy feels lonely without the penguin, and finds the penguin's bag floating in the water. He picks it out and finds in it a strip of photos taken by the penguin and realises that this was all a huge mistake. The penguin wasn't lost all along, he was just lonely.
The boy turns back to get the penguin but he finds that all the penguins there are identical and none of them have an umbrella, so he gives up and decides to go back. but then he sees the penguin sailing towards him on the umbrella, they become friends and row home across the ocean.
