Trivia

'The New Sofa' reunited veteran actors Tom Courtenay and Helen Fraser, who play Dave's parents, David Sr and Jocelyn. The two trained together at RADA and made their screen breakthroughs in the classic film version of Billy Liar (1963), which starred Courtenay in the title role, with Fraser as his fiancée Barbara. Ralf Little (who didn't appear in this special) also played Billy in a 2004 stage production and Helen Fraser played Billy's mother Alice in a 2009-2010 UK touring production. See more »

A strange twist for the Royles
12 August 2014 | by See all my reviews

The beauty of the Royle Family was always in its subtlety. At least, until The Queen of Sheba, which took on the challenge of an emotional goodbye, and pulled it off brilliantly.

This year, David Senior became the latest stride away from subtlety, with a bold hat, bold bow tie, bold ukulele and bold puns. He is a character you either love or hate, and the viewer's opinion of him will strongly affect how they view the whole episode.

The Christmas Dinner disaster is one you shake your head at instead of laughing at, but the 'mingling' was the same old Royle Family we love, and Jocelyn's competition with Barbeara was one of the highlights of the episode.

This one isn't for everyone - some will feel betrayed by the shift in direction while others will welcome it, but it's still a great episode.
