My honest thoughts on 'My Pride'
brightbeeee9 May 2022
It's been a while since i'v watched 'My Pride', so I've recently decided to rewatch the first season. I'm happy to say It's just as wonderful as I remember.

The writing and dialogue gives life to this series and it's characters. Every scene creating a binge worthy tale of drama and fantasy. I was never left bored and the pacing made sure you held on to every moment the characters were on screen.

The world building feels held back, but organized, mostly focusing on single sections. However I imagine this will change considering where the season final left off.

I would definitely watch this series over again, as it presents a mystery for the viewer both is story, and a little bit in animation.

Finally the animation, while limited it's a real treat to the eye when you get to see fluid animation. As it is an internet series I was blown away by the production. Of course being an art student I'm incredibly inspired although recent news by the series creator has opened up my mind to the amount of backbreaking labor, and tears put into such work.

I can definitely say this series is something everyone should watch, if not but for the love and passion put forth into every scene.

Good, but a lack of character IN characters.
nekoeeko0922 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When I first started watching My Pride, I was hooked. And I still am! But, the thing is..

First, about how the creator advertises the show itself The creator seems to just flash off the show as the '' Gay Lion Show '' rather than the great show it is, and as a lesbian, I enjoy representation of the LGBTQ community, but queerbaiting is a big problem.

The creator queerbaits viewers, mainly advertising that the main character, Nothing, is gay.

Secondly, but actually about the show.. Certain characters seem to LACK character, being plot tools, and changing their usual behavior to match the plot, for example;

When Longrun/Hover yells at Nothing for missing her naming ceremony on accident, when actual reasons were in front of her. She gets mad that she joined the pride for Nothing, only for her not to show up.

While this was *somewhat* in character, it seems to be very unrealistic and plot driven.

But the good parts, The plot seems to be carried out well despite all of its tools, like how it reveals that there is more to the goddesses than whats told, how it was a fabricated lie to what a victim wanted to believe. The goddesses weren't on Earth to tell everyone that Pride Law is a lie, so it leaves Nothing to be able to tell everyone. And I think that's a very nice way to go with things.

TLDR; Queerbaiting, and ablest lions lack character, and are only used for plot. But the storywriting makes up for it, the hint of mystery is good.

This show is friggin' awesome

While I think it has some issues, My Pride is by far the best animated web series I've seen so far. It's super well-made in terms of direction, editing, animation, scoring, etc., but more importantly, it's almost always really compelling in multiple ways; the characters are complex and endearing, the story has many unique and unpredictable elements (as well as some really clever foreshadowing, on the other end of the spectrum), it has immersive worldbuilding that progresses well, and if you pay attention to its themes, the show may actually leave you with something to think about. On top of that, there is not a single dull moment in the second half of the season - it's really tightly structured and always manages to be captivating in one way or another, whether it's because it's intense, heartwarming, or uplifting, just to name a few adjectives. All that being said, though, My Pride does falter sometimes, mostly because of some minor continuity errors, but especially during some of the earlier episodes where the writing can be fairly bland and cliché. Thankfully, the show does have a strong introduction that's almost sure to hook you into the story, and it also picks up considerably towards the middle of the season. Overall, I'd highly recommend this show to anyone who's into fantasy that has a realistic edge or to anyone who wants to become invested in an interesting, endearing story. Awesome show.

My Pride is amazing!
zareeninamdar17 July 2021
My Pride is hands down the BEST series I've ever seen. The animation, storyline, characters, voice acting and musical score is perfection! I personally love the display of feminism, the lgbtq+ community, the misogyny of the real world and proving that disabled people are no less than any other person. A huge thank you to Maddi Patton and the My Pride team, for making this spectacular series that has taught me to always stay strong and be proud of who you are.

Not good, but being an indie show I'm not going to rate it lower
MaximumBoogie7 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is a 2 hour long review of this show on Youtube, it's called "My Pride: Highlighting the Toxicity" and I agree with a lot of the points in the video. My review is basically a summary of the most important bits of the video, because I don't expect everybody to watch a review that is longer than the actual source material.

Let's point out first what I like about the show. The animation, it's not the best but it being an indie series, the animators put their attention where it was needed, and their hard work shows in the final product. I also really like the rest of the visuals, the backgrounds and designs of characters and locations. It's all very pretty and pleasant to look at.

The voice acting is great. One thing that doesn't make sense, however, is some characters' accents. Powerstrike and Farleap are British, while Sharptongue and Nothing are American, this doesn't make sense since they all lived in and grew up in the same place.

And I guess some of the dialogue isn't too bad. There are some lines that I like, like Nothing saying how Hover is great, and correcting herself to "hate, I hate her." when her mother judges her. That was pretty funny.

That's about everything I like. Now onto things that I think are a little less. The writing of the storyline and characters.

Episode 1 (No-Mane): this is the best episode, no question. Nothing really controversial or "weird" happens (and with weird I don't mean supernatural, this is a show with supernatural elements and that's okay), and characters are well established. 7/10, because it's just a good episode, not great, but good.

Episode 2 (Nothing): This is where things get weird. Nothing has a huntress assessment, which she doesn't finish because she trips, her assessment is then automatically done. You mean lionesses never trip on their assessments? Don't they have to finish it? There would be a LOT more lionesses with mocking names out there if it was like this. It could be passed off as Powerstrike just being very ableist, but this kind of gets retconned later on. Then there's Hover's introduction... oh boy, here we go. First of all, this is supposed to be our protag's love interest, but she makes fun of Nothing? Was this supposed to be funny? Because Hover came off as very ableist. Now, I'm not physically disabled so I can't say everything, and I guess Hover was making fun of Prides as a whole, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. 4/10

Episode 3 (The Calling): this is also one of the better episodes. Sharptongue's death was kind of expected, since she was so sick last episode, but I still didn't expect it at the moment and the scene really set the tone well. Hover and Nothing's relationship was at the best in this episode too (ignoring the final scene, I'll talk about it later), they were actually pretty cute, I'll admit. What I didn't like however, is that Nothing was trying to get Hover to join her Pride. Like, bruh, you know how awful the Pride is to you, and you want Hover to join your misogynistic cult?! I also cannot believe Hover would agree to that, it was very out of character for her. Also out of character for Nothing to invite Hover. Then there's the final narration by an older Nothing, "I wouldn't have let her join if I had known what would come next." And nothing proceeds to happen that couldn't possibly have happened according to Pride Law (established lore). Another thing that I didn't like was how Nothing and Hover are supposedly already in a relationship here (it was confirmed outside of the show by Tribble). This show being gay is your main marketing tactic, so why can't you have your lesbian lions ask each other to be their mate or say that they are mates? I just thought they were pining after each other while watching the episode, I was actually looking forward to a confession scene, but I guess these lions are mates and in love even though they show almost no signs of it. 5.5/10 because it was pretty decent ignoring its problems.

Episode 4 (Outsider): this episode falls into the "innocent dumb child accidentally causing trouble"-trope that I absolutely despise. Now I don't like Feather's character as a whole, but in this episode he is especially annoying. Also the weird thing of Nothing forgetting about time for like a minute. If you had that little time, maybe you shouldn't have gone away, maybe. And also Hover's assessment happening while Nothing was slightly late. How short are these assessments?! Overall this episode has very bad writing and everything that happens doesn't seem natural and was just put there to keep the plot moving and to introduce drama. 3/10.

Episode 5 (Escape): Visually the most impressive episode. This was the only episode where I found myself disappointed the action bits weren't longer, Quickmane's corpse genuinely scared me a bit on my first watch. Okay, here comes the dumb useless drama. First of all, Hover being upset with Nothing is very pointless. Yes, she broke a promise, but being angry and refusing to help her at the moment seems very petty, her brother is literally in danger of being murdered! What do you mean you won't help her because she didn't show up to the dumb test that you suddenly care about?! I thought you didn't care about Prides, but for Nothing you would do anything. Hover is very stupid in this episode and it actually made me hate her. (Also, what kind of name is Longrun? Swiftbite, her name in the original book, was way better, why'd you change it, Tribble?) Then there's Powerstrike. Oh boy. Yes, she suddenly cares about her daughter now, even though she was abusive to her in past episodes. I get the "hiding your love because it means weakness"-trope, but suddenly she doesn't care about that anymore? Also she just lets her son die I guess. "You could have been a Hunt Chief" yikes, guess you only love your daughter because of what she could have accomplished, not because... oh, idk, because she's your daughter?! 5/10 because of the pretty visuals, I can't bring myself to totally hate this episode.

Episode 6 (Prideless): If you took this episode out, nothing would change in the story. Yes, we already know Nothing wouldn't abandon Feather, you've established she's not that kind of person, what kind of test is this? Rain was interesting while we didn't know who she was, theorising on who she is was fun but overall there isn't much to say about her. 4/10 because it isn't *bad*, just pointless.

Ep 7: I really don't like it. Farleap's jealous of her sister whose life is terrible, gets mistreated by everyone she knows and is now supposedly dead? Yeah, no. According to Farleap Nothing got all the attention from Powerstrike. This is just... incorrect. It was established in episode 5 that Powerstrike tried to ignore Nothing the best she could, and in every single scene they interacted Powerstrike was yelling at Nothing. Was this what you were jealous of, Farleap? Powerstrike suddenly also cares about Nothing's wellbeing (no, the "confession" from episode 5 doesn't count), and tries to defend Hover. I hate the fact that Powerstrike is getting away with abusing Nothing, because Nothing is a kind person and is going to forgive her mother if Powerstrike apologises, I honestly hope Powerstrike dies before this can happen, there is no way a scene like that can go well. 3/10

Ep 8: This episode is very out of place, it seems like it was added in last minute. Karabi and Kyoga were cute and the "plot twist" (basically everybody knew it already before the episode) that they were in a relationship, was pretty well-executed. Their relationship, however, wasn't the best. I'm just going to say it, Nothing being a reincarnation of Kyoga is stupid. She's now destined to be special and to defeat Lite, when she was already special, because she survived all these hardships! You don't have to make her chosen by the godesses! This actually ruins her character in my opinion. If it is revealed Hover is actually the reincarnation of Karabi, I'm going to riot, this would make their relationship "destiny" which makes it less special. 2/10 because the visuals and world were cool.

Episode 9 (Fire): I didn't expect this LGBTQ-show to be so queerbait-y. Moonstrike is a token trans character (NO, we aren't counting that one other trans character that shows up blurred in the background in one frame, I bet most of you don't even know who I'm talking about), she is a Hunt Chief who is a Hunt Chief despite Pride Law being extremely anti-LGBTQ. Nothing is explained about this. Fire and Feather's rivalry came out of nowhere. I also HATE Feather's speech, like bro, you're an able-bodied person, you don't get to say what is empowering to Nothing. Her name is basically a slur! What do you mean it means something else now? 4/10

Ep 10: By this episode I was kind of numb. I don't have any strong opinions on anything except that Nothing yelling "my name is Nothing!" was very cringey. Why is Fire even trying to kill his sister? He seemed nice in episode 9. Feather fake-dying was also stupid, that wound should totally have killed him. Should have just had the guts to kill him off. 3/10

Also, I am not a big fan of Tribbleofdoom anymore because of this show. I appreciate her efforts to make a project that she is passionate about, but it's not good. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, the show is toxic, ableist, queerbait-y, and has bad writing. And this actually hurts to type, I've been subscribed to Tribble's channel since episode 24 of Cow of the Wild, which is way before the first trailer dropped, which was also better than the current trailer for Season 1.

TLDR: Cow of the Wild was better. I cannot bring myself to rate an indie project lower than 4/10 when I know how hard it can be to manage one, but my actualy opinion would be like 3/10 or something.

Warning: Spoilers
"My Pride" is a show that is based on a concept that the creator wrote up when she was a teenager. I made what I guess was a fundamental error and actually went out of my way to read the original story before deciding to watch this show.

It's about as bad as you'd expect a story by a 14 year old to be. Teenagers naturally think that adding gratuitous violence and serious themes with no substance is what makes a deep, fascinating story but they've yet to develop the maturity to realize WHY exactly these themes prompt such a reaction and think having them be part of the story for no rhyme or reason is what makes the story compelling by default.

When that's not how it works. Your story is either going to be too depressing and violent to sit through and/or it's just going to be laughably amateur.

You may think I'm being a huge jerk for taking a shot at somebody's childhood writing but when said somebody has taken this show and adapted it in her adult years and made next to no changes (aside from some names and having Hover be Nothing's girlfriend for cheap gay representation), I think the lack of reflection years down the road makes it fair game.

This show makes the exact same mistake that the creator's original story did: it trades out having any actual meaning or purpose for being depressing as all hell. Every single character - excluding Nothing by default - is terrible in every aspect. Even Feather, who is sold as the show's lion answer to Koda from Brother Bear or whatever cutesy Disney child character comes to mind, eventually develops into this holier-than-thou, whiny teenager who preaches to Nothing about how she should forget that her name is a reminder of how her abusive mother viewed her as useless due to her disability. Even though Feather (like the creator of the show) is not physically disabled and this makes for a troubling delivery when you're trying to appeal to a disabled audience who have no doubt experienced similar discrimination related to their conditions.

And this completely comes out of nowhere for Feather's character. In fact, there are a lot of instances in this show where the creator changes what she has already developed on a whim in order to sell a cheap, shoe-horned moment as deep storytelling or to avoid taking any real risks with the story in general. Again, it's incredibly juvenile writing. Perhaps if the creator was not so weirdly attached to the original story she came up with when she was a child and was therefore an inexperienced and frankly bad writer, she may have gotten somewhere with this concept.

Because I also went and watched her other series, Cow of the Wild, and while most of the episodes also carry the same issues as My Pride that I've just gone over (due to also being written by the creator as a child), the last few episodes had some pretty solid scriptwriting and direction. Maddi Patton clearly knows how to write and how to deliver a powerful scene. She just didn't as a child and this is why My Pride feels like a massive downgrade and was probably better off staying in the drafts, as the kids say. Or should've been completely rewritten from the ground up at the very least.

Others here have recommended an analysis video by a user known as Detective Calico and I also highly suggest watching it as a companion to this review. It covers the exact issues I am talking about and how this show just doesn't work as a progressive, empowering tale but is more in-depth and sums up my exact thoughts articulately.

Oh Tribble. Where did you go so wrong.
ivorobotnik27 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In the immediate aftermath of Vivziepop's sudden success with Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, other indie animated works were sure to follow.

The first (and worst) of these was TribbleOfDoom's 10-episode overacted, overdramatic, poorly voiced, bad attempt at social commentary. There are a plethora of issues with the series, discussed more in depth in the 2 hour video "Highlighting The Toxicity in My Pride" by Detective Calico.

I won't be going that far in depth here.

I watched My Pride with each episode, craving more indie animation in the aftermath of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss's releases. I believe it first blew up during the COVID pandemic in early 2020.

While I found the first and second episodes to be good, cracks started showing early on. I'm in no place to criticise the animation fairly, but it frankly doesn't look all that good. This was probably due to the fact episodes were monthly.

However I CAN criticize the writing, and hoo boy is it rough. From the poorly handled disability representation, such as literally naming the main character "Nothing", to the character inconsistencies, to the cruelty of literally every adult character, there are plenty of examples to draw from, but I'll focus on the two most egregious.

Hover is the prideless love interest of Nothing, and probably the worst character in the series. Imagine Jax from TADC, but way worse since we're meant to root for her. She is simply just an unpleasant, inconsistent character. For a supposed love interest, she has no romantic chemistry with Nothing. Instead, she comes off as a toxic, unreasonable bully. In her first appearance, she insults Nothing and mocks her injuries. As for the inconsistencies, she switches her personality on a dime halfway through.

Without spoiling too much, after Nothing fled her terribly abusive pride, she meets Hover. The two eventually return for some reason, instead of living safely on their own, because having logical characters wouldn't make a very interesting plot. Upon returning, Hover bizarrely becomes willing to give up everything to join Nothing's pride so they could be together. Because Hover is still Hover, she becomes a total jackass again, getting upset at Nothing for being unable to attend her pride initiation. Aside from that, she never defends Nothing from the abuse she faces.

The other worst character, is the annoying child character, Feather. For the most part, that's all he is. Unfortunately he decides to say something pretty screwed up. When Nothing wants to change her name that was given to her by a pride who hated her, as so to demean her, Feather decides to encourage her to keep the demeaning name because she can make it something good. Not exactly a good thing to a disabled abuse survivor, as far as I know.

Lastly the acting is sub-par. Terrible fake accents, and voice acting done by people who sound new to the concept. Though that makes sense given the budget was likely all spent on animation.

In all, this show deserved to be left in the dust when indie animation blew up after its conclusion. Even the worst episodes of Helluva Boss are still better than this shows average episode. Credit where credit is due of course: the action is mostly well done and environments are drawn well, furthermore it is impressive how fast episodes were pumped out, even if most weren't good.
