Strong matches make up for a relatively weak biography, 5 February 2009

In case you've only started watching wrestling in the past four or five years, Curt Hennig is Mr Perfect, one of the great intercontinental champions and wrestling personalities of the late 80s and 1990s who tragically passed away following a cocaine overdose in 2003. His gimmick in wrestling was being "Absolutely Perfect in every way." It's a shame the same can't be said of the first documentary disc on this DVD release. While the documentary does a good job of explaining Hennig's significance to wrestling as a wrestler, announcer and an on air personality, it glosses over some of the other events in his life. Specifically his death.

As such, you feel like you've learned nothing about Hennig you didn't already know and had none of the big questions answered. But I guess this DVD was made to celebrate his life and career.

The first disc also includes two bonus matches, an early bout with Eddie Gilbert at Madison Square Garden in 1982 and an AWA Tag Team match from 1986 where Hennig teams up with a young Scott Hall against Steve Regal and Jimmy Garvin. IT also includes Hennig's Hall of Fame induction from 2007 and the "Rap is Crap" music video from his WCW days. And a number of "absolutely perfect" vignettes. Some are still funny today, some not.

On Disc 2 we get into this DVD's strong point, Hennig's matches, starting with his one hour draw with Nick Bockwinkel from the dying days of the AWA in 1986. This is not a terrible match, but would probably pass some of the younger wrestling fans by.

We then go to Wrestlefest 1988 with Curt Hennig taking on Terry Taylor in a short match. Then we have an early match in Hennig's most famous rivalry, with Bret Hart from MSG in 1989. The next match was the most high profile one of Hennig's career as he put is undefeated record on the line against Hulk Hogan, winning a passable match by DQ again at MSG.

We're then back in the Garden in late 1990 as Hennig defeats the Texas Tornado Kerry Von Erich to win the Intercontinental Title. This leads to the next match on the disc and one of the best matches in WWE History as Hennig loses the Title to Bret Hart at Summerslam 1991.

The disc fast forwards two years to Summerslam 1993 where Hennig, this time as a fan favourite, just fails to win the Intercontinental Title from Shawn Micheals. The disc ends with another match with Bret Hart, this time in WCW from Uncensored 1998. A nice way to finish a middling collection.

Curt Hennig is a wrestling legend, worthy of his own disc, but this one falls a little bit short of what he deserves. Still a solid effort and well worth watching.
