A hopeful vision of peace for our time
SwiftJonathan11 December 2008
An elegantly crafted short film about two nations, the US and the former Soviet Union, taking their first steps toward mutual acceptance and friendship. Represented first in conflict like two sides of a chessboard, an old man strikes out, but a young observer, his grandson perhaps, seeks a new vision for the future. Behind a wall of false books, histories and doctrines, the boy opens a window that allows him to see a possible future, where he might travel to the US, discover a new culture and befriend its people represented by a lovely young woman who likewise is searching for something beyond her own borders.

While the message remains hopeful and optimistic, through the eyes of youthful children, the story nevertheless explores the difficulty the US and Soviet Union (and now Russia) have had in bridging the divide between their respective world views.

This short film balances a sense of optimism with poignant realism masterfully.
