Cassadaga Gets Limited Theatrical Run; Check Out The Trailer!

23 November 2012 6:39 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Finally! Last year at Screamfest La, I had the opportunity to catch the flick Cassadaga, the second feature from filmmaker Anthony Diblasi, who wrote and directed Dread, one of the few faithful and solid Clive Barker adaptations. At the time of the screening, I knew next to nothing about Cassadaga, but ended up blown away by the movie. While it had a theatrical release overseas, it has remained unreleased here in the States… until now! Variety reports that Archstone Distribution will open the film in 10 markets in the latter half of 2013. From the article, “We feel that there is hole in the market for high grade independent titles,” said Archstone prez Brady Bowen. “Many of our producers want to see their film released in theaters and we can offer that service to them.” Cassadaga starring Kelen Coleman and Kevin Alejandro (True Blood), will open in the top 10 markets in the second half of the year. »

A sound engineer's view on Berberian Sound Studio

10 September 2012 2:31 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

We still smash and explode vegetables just like the dorky sound engineer in this film about making a low budget horror flick in the 1970s, says sound engineer Adam Mendez

Many vegetables die in the act of making a film. And that's exactly what we see happening in this eerie, sumptuous movie about a dorky English sound engineer, Gilderoy, working on a low-budget Italian horror flick in the 1970s.

We see Gilderoy (Toby Jones) and his assistants smashing marrows to make the sound of a body slamming on to the ground, and making fat sizzle for a scene involving the torture of a nun. We still do much the same sort of thing today. A few years ago, I worked on the horror film Dread. For a scene in which a boy's eardrums burst, we exploded grapes right up against the microphone. More recently, I worked on 127 Hours; for the »

Cassadaga DVD review

2 May 2012 1:38 PM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

The latest in the line of direct-to-dvd horror movies from the After Dark stable is a supernatural/torture porn hybrid called Cassadaga.

Having seen a few of their ‘Originals’ (link to previous reviews, Scream Of The Banshee and The Task, I wasn’t expecting much - however this was a little more coherent and even contained some scares. Whether this is down to the fact that it wasn’t made by a newbie (director Anthony Diblasi previously made the Clive Barker adaptation Dread) I can’t say, but it certainly felt more like a ‘real’ film.

Cassadaga stars Kelen Coleman as Lily, a deaf art teacher who loses her younger sister in a car accident in the early stages of the film. Spurred on by this tragic event Lily decides to enrol in a course at Cassadaga University and finds board at the house of an old lady named Claire »

Move to Cassadaga for Ghosts and Good Times: A Movie Review

25 April 2012 4:00 AM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*here be spoilers.

Director: Anthony Diblasi.

Writers: Bruce Wood and Scott Poiley.

Cast: Kelen Coleman, Kevin Alejandro and Louise Fletcher.

Cassadaga is a great film! This review had to start with this phrase. As background, Cassadaga is a film from the producer of the Midnight Meat Train, Anthony Diblasi. Diblasi also worked on After Dark Horror's Dread from 2009. So, there is a horror pedigree here. Writers Bruce Wood and Scott Poiley are relatively new to the genre; however, they have penned a great entry in horror.

Cassadaga stands out for introducing so many genres. There are elements of the supernatural here, with a ghost motivating events. There are also elements of the horror genre as a serial killer roams the hiking trails of Cassadaga, Florida. A love story develops and drama is central to the story. It is arguable to say that drama is the film's anchor. After all, this »

Watch the First Ten Minutes of Ramzi Abed's Telephone World

12 April 2012 11:37 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We've been talking about Ramzi Abed's Telephone World for quite some time, and we now have the chance to see the first ten minutes, which are primarily in the form of the opening titles of the film with original music by The Bystanders. Abed promises the entire film will be premiering soon.

As he told us previously, "This project is drenched in suspense and is beyond voyeuristic also. It has things happen in it that I've never seen before ever, including the opening shot, which is of a camera being thrown and bounced down several blocks of Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, and the main body of the film, which was shot in one continuous live shot in one single take in multiple video formats. Not to mention some of the sound design created and being created by sound genius Borja Sau (Portland, Box of Shadows). It's chock full of surprises. »

Anthony Diblasi's Cassadaga Is An After Dark Films Release in the UK, DVD Details

20 March 2012 1:17 PM, PDT | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

The director of Dread, Anthony Diblasi, followed up his Clive Barker adaptation with a supernatural thriller entitled Cassadaga.  The film made its premiere at Screamfest in Los Angeles last fall; since then, we've been awaiting word on distribution.

It appears the film was picked up in the UK for a DVD release on April 16th, and it is being branded as an After Dark film.  If you recall, After Dark also released Dread here in the U.S.  I wonder if they've acquired the picture for a U.S. release as well?

Cassadaga is the story of Lily More, played by Kelen Coleman (The Office), who seeks solace at the spiritualist community of Cassadaga. A deaf art teacher struggling with bereavement seeks refuge in a spiritualist community only to encounter a ghost bent on vengeance.

Attempting to fuse two of the most diametrically opposed of current horror trends, director Anthony Diblasi follows up his muddled Clive Barker adaptation Dread with a potentially confused yarn that's more rewarding than it might sound on paper. Cassadaga mixes the by-now overly familiar lank-haired spooks of J-horror with the exploitative suffering of the much-derided torture porn genre, while also borrowing heavily from Argento's Giallo blueprint and »
