‘Rebel in the Rye’: Why Danny Strong Recut His J.D. Salinger Biopic After the Sundance Premiere

3 August 2017 11:16 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

For his directorial debut, Danny Strong wanted to get a little more personal. The multi-hyphenate is known for his work on both sides of the camera, from acting in small screen fare like “Gilmore Girls” and “Mad Men,” to scripting features like “Game Change” (the HBO movie that earned him two Emmys), “Lee DanielsThe Butler,” and the final pair of “Hunger Games” films, in addition to creating a little show called “Empire,” but when it came time to direct, Strong sought out something closer to his own experience. A biopic of J.D. Salinger fit the bill.

But when Strong’s “Rebel in the Rye” premiered at Sundance earlier this year, the fact-based feature wasn’t a universal crowdpleaser. Fortunately, that’s not the movie audiences will see when it opens in September, and Strong is hopeful that the new version speaks more clearly to his original intentions when it came to telling the story. »

Her amazing talent and larger-than-life persona have captivated millions for decades, so it comes as no surprise that a series about the chart-topping singer’s life story is in the works. Deadline reports that Starz is developing an as-yet untitled fictional scripted drama series “based on the the music superstar’s real-life experiences” and her “rise to fame.”

Set in 1986 New York City, the drama will chronicle the “rise of an ambitious bi-racial 16-year-old girl, an aspiring singer-songwriter who survived a difficult childhood to become the biggest selling female music artist of all time,” Deadline writes.

The Grammy winner’s biggest hits include “We Belong Together,” “One Sweet Day,” “Love Takes Time,” “Vision of Love,” and “Fantasy.”

Nina Colman (“Mahogany”) wrote the pilot and has signed on to serve as showrunner. She, Carey, Stella Bulochnikov (“Boss”), and Teri Weinberg (“Ugly Betty”) are among the project’s executive producers.

Carey’s acting credits include “Empire,” “Lee DanielsThe Butler,” and “Precious.” In 2016 she executive produced “Mariah’s World,” an eight part docuseries about her life on E! “I refuse to call it a reality show,” she said at the time. The pop singer, producer, songwriter, and actress explained, “I thought it would be a good opportunity to kind of, like, show my personality and who I am, even though I feel like my real fans have an idea of who I am. A lot of people have misperceptions about this and that,” she observed.
