Narrated by Ben Harper and Tariq "Black Thought" of The Roots, the 75-minuted documentary film White Wash is available on DVD and other formats, including screening for Free on Hulu, which I discovered over the weekend. I spend so much time on Netflix that other streaming sites (like Hulu) are ignored. And while Hulu has its pay service (Hulu+), the standard Hulu service is free, with commercials of course. But, unlike Netflix, which charges you a monthly fee, Hulu gives you two options - the pay service (more content, no ads), or the free service (access to less content, and with ads). White Wash is available under option number 2. So here's your chance...

With the next Summer Olympics now another four years away, Indiewire looks at a handful of non-Olympic sports in its latest curated Documentaries page for Hulu. Will any of these events make the cut for a future Olympiad? We'll have to wait and see -- but you can watch all of these sports docs for free right now! In "White Wash," director Ted Woods explores the history of surfing, created and developed by Pacific Islanders, and how it has become widely associated almost exclusively with white athletes. Along the way, he puts the lie to the idea that black people don't surf by recognizing the talents and achievements of black and other non-white surfers. Although the International Surfing Association is recognized by the governing body of the Olympics, the sport has never been included in the games. A strange Australasian hybrid, surf lifesaving, was included as a demonstration sport at the 1900 games,...

"For a decade starting in the late 60s, the Kashmere Stage Band — a funk-infused outfit rooted in a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in northeast Houston — built a reputation as the most formidable high school band in the country." Scott Tobias for NPR: "Under the leadership of Conrad O Johnson Sr, a prodigious musician in his own right (he once played with Count Basie), the band zigged where others zagged, embracing the sounds (and moves) of James Brown and Otis Redding while its peers were mimicking the ossified standards of 40s big bands. In competition — and on recordings — the contrast was clear: The Kashmere Stage Band was lively, exuberant, spontaneous and contemporary, and the also-rans were square nostalgists."
"Three decades after graduation, members reunite to honor their beloved 93-year-old bandleader, teacher and role model," writes Eric Hynes in Time Out New York. "Amid its celebrations of black power, ambitious Afros and fly female trombonists,...
