Comedic Episode Full of Heart-warming Content By Shing Chung
This fall I started watching the 13th season of the TV series Film Lab Presents on Friday nights and the
episodes have been a blast for me quarantining at home. The series showcases a variety of Asian
American stories of contemporary drama, comedy, and everything in between. Lots of Asian American
faces in these contents! The show is produced by the Film Lab, a non-profit that works to promote,
support and create racial and gender parity in entertainment media.
Over-throne by the A Team is especially amazing for its puppet design of its toilet paper puppets. The
short film is about a competition of toilet papers. The viewers are introduced to all types of toilet paper
puppets when they come alive, such as a surfer dude, a Puerto Rican girl, a construction worker, and so
many more. Their dialogues reflect their personalities and they make the film feel like a five minutes
montage of different kinds of character improvisation. But be prepared for a cynical surprise ending.
The Kung Fu Kid by Team Chew Tube is a light-hearted comedy about a family of superheroes and
villains. The film does not take itself too seriously as we see character names like Bad Dad and the Big
Sister. The actors had a good chemistry with each other and the storyline is a light-hearted version of the
real pandemic as it is a disease of intelligence. Viewers will find this simple superhero comedy relatable
as it bases its villain's plot on spreading the virus of intelligence. I think one of the benefits of making a
short film is the fact that you are telling a short story that should not take up too much time. Team Chew
Tube did a great job at using the short amount of time on the film to tell a cute and cheerful story with a
nice message in the end.
