Touching episodes in short film forms demonstrating the struggles of everyone in everyday life during the pandemic By Shing Chung
This fall I started watching the 13th season of the TV series Film Lab Presents on Friday nights and the episodes have been a blast for me quarantining at home. The series showcases a variety of Asian American stories of contemporary drama, comedy, and everything in between. Lots of Asian American faces in these contents! The show is produced by the Film Lab, a non-profit that works to promote, support and create racial and gender parity in entertainment media.
Home Free by team Soy Sauce Chicken is entirely recorded on a phone camera. A Chinese lady is seen leaving these video messages for her sister during the times of COVID-19. We see someone who is so optimistic at first about her new job and apartment slowly losing opportunities and hope because of her identity being associated with the virus. It is truly heartbreaking to see the rise and fall of an individual due to the animosity around her in such a short five minutes span.
MiaMakesACutCreaseVideo_MP4 by SoryMode Studios is about a wannabe makeup influencer as she tries on different lighting, personalities, and jokes to attract followers. It goes hand in hand with the theme of this year's Shootout: Going Viral. The film explores all the awkwardness and anxieties every YouTube Influencer wannabe goes through in a funny and personal way. It is about finding that balance between being yourself and also putting out contents that are attractive to the viewers. The short proves that "Going Viral" is definitely easier said than done.
A Second Look by Sunny & Soul portrays the life of an Asian American man as he goes through inner monologues and self-doubts about his Asian American identity in the midst of a pandemic. Lucas has been warned by his girlfriend that there has been physical animosity towards Asian Americans in the country and that he should cover up just to be safe. The intensity of the situation and bigotry should be shocking to the viewers as no one should ever feel like they are a threat going outside their house.
