The Longest Ride movie review: romantic bargaining

20 July 2015 1:20 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

For once, a movie based on a Nicholas Sparks book appears to be populated by relatively realistic approximations of human beings dealing with relationship conflict in realistic ways. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of Nicholas Sparks

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I think this might be the first movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel that I haven’t hated. Oh, sure, it’s set in an American South — specifically, North Carolina — where there are, impossibly, no black people (see also: Safe Haven), and where it only ever rains as an expression of manly sadness that cannot be articulated in any other way. It uses a motif similar to The Notebook’s, in which romantic handwritten documents of a relationship — in this case, love letters — allow for flashbacks to the 1940s, »

Fyi: 'Jurassic World' Has Broken a Lot of Box Office Records

23 June 2015 11:08 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

As Brad wrote yesterday, Jurassic World did better over its second weekend than initial estimates indicated, raking in $106.6 million over the Friday-to-Sunday frame to wrest the crown for best second weekend from Marvel's The Avengers, which pulled in $103.1 million during its second weekend back in 2012. Impressive, yes, but that is far from the only record Universal's latest dino adventure has toppled over the course of its box office run. Through Sunday, Jurassic World has made a whopping $402.8 million at the domestic box office, making it Universal's highest grossing movie ever (not accounting for inflation) and also the fastest film to cross the $400 million mark after doing so in just 10 days of release. The previous film to hold that record was, you guessed it, The Avengers, which isn't a surprise, but perhaps it will surprise you to learn that it took Joss Whedon's superhero team-up a full 14 days to hit that mark, »

Jurassic World is a Massive Hit, Chris Pratt to Return for Sequel

14 June 2015 4:22 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

"Jurassic World" hit theaters this weekend and grossed a record breaking $83 million on Friday to earn the biggest June opening day of all time. The film beat the previous record holder "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," which grossed $68 million in 2011. Insiders are predicting that "Jurassic World" may end up with as much as $190 million over the weekend. The biggest weekend record is held by "The Avengers" with $207.4 million. Only time will tell if "Jurassic World" will be able to take down the leader. With such positive news, it's not surprising that Universal Pictures thought ahead and locked its lead actor, Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), for sequels. In a new interview, Pratt confirmed that he's on board for "Jurassic World 2," stating: "I am. They have me for I think 38 movies or something." »

Here are three examples: Stewart was a U.S. soldier who befriends an inmate (Peyman Moaadi) at the American Gulag, Guantanamo, in Peter Sattler's little-seen (at least in theaters) Camp X-Ray. She was one of Best Actress Oscar winner Julianne Moore's daughters in Wash Westmoreland and the recently deceased Richard Glatzer's Alzheimer's drama Still Alice. This summer fans of Anna Paquin are in for a treat with the release of the Rogue Cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which restores the True Blood star’s action sequence which was cut from last year’s mutant superhero blockbuster, and now it has been revealed that the extended version will include 11 minutes and 11 seconds of additional footage.

The scene in question reportedly sees Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) launching a rescue attempt, breaking Paquin’s Rogue out of a mutant prison camp controlled by the Sentinels. It will extend the film’s run time from 131 minutes and 26 seconds to 142 minutes 27 seconds.

Update: Bryan Singer has taken to Twitter to state that the Rogue Cut is actually more than 17 minutes longer than the original cut, “and has a few little changes I made”. I guess we’ll find out for sure when it finally gets an official release date. »

9 March 2015 12:28 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

American Ultra stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg will be reunited later this year in another project: Woody Allen's next as yet untitled feature. Bruce Willis is the third cast member whose name has been publicly announced. The source for this information is an "exclusive" report via Deadline.com's Mike Fleming Jr. So far, as Fleming explains in his brief piece, Woody Allen and "his people" haven't confirmed the casting. In other words, things could change in the not-too-distant future. See also: Kristen Stewart Joins Kelly Reichardt Movie Project, also featuring Laura Dern and Michelle Williams. Unsurprisingly, no plot details about the upcoming Woody Allen project have been forthcoming. In fact, one wonders if Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, and Bruce Willis – in case they have indeed joined the fold – know what the movie is going to be about. Allen's latest collaborators – Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Edward Walson – will be producing the film. »
