Dan Stevens shares Beauty and the Beast cast selfie

15 April 2015 8:45 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Pre-production on Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast has begun and the Beast himself, Dan Stevens has given us our first look at the cast.

The actor posted a partial cast selfie to Instagram earlier today (on what also happens to be star Emma Watson’s 25th birthday) and the movie already looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun!

Stevens has rounded up co-stars Josh Gad (Le Fou), Luke Evans (Gaston), Kevin Kline (Maurice), and Emma Watson (Belle) for their group shot.

The only cast members missing are Emma Thompson who stars as Mrs. Potts, Gugu Mbatha-Raw who is playing Plumette, and Audra McDonald as the wardrobe Madame de la Grande Bouche.  Rumours have been swirling that Oscar winner Jean Dujardin has been eyed for the role of Lumiere and we have to admit, that would pretty much be perfect casting.  It was just confirmed »

Beauty And The Beast Snags Ian McKellen For Cogsworth

13 April 2015 9:04 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

However you feel about Disney plumbing its past fairy tales for big screen redos, there’s no denying that the studio’s casting choices for Bill Condon’s upcoming Beauty and the Beast have been spot-on. With Emma Watson in the role of Belle, and Dan Stevens and Luke Evans vying for her affections as the Beast and Gaston (respectively), the film looks increasingly like a must-see for acting aficionados. Now, the production has attracted another A-lister, with news that X-Men‘s Ian McKellen is taking on the role of Cogsworth.

In the original Disney flick, Cogsworth was the loyal butler to the Prince who was magically transformed into a clock by the same spell that turned his master into a savage beast.

McKellen joins a supporting cast that also includes Josh Gad as Gaston’s right hand man LeFou, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Kevin Kline as Maurice, and Audra MacDonald as Garderobe. »

MTV Movie Awards predictions: Is Zac Efron still the best at being shirtless?

9 April 2015 5:12 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Best Shirtless Performance is a relatively new category at the MTV Movie Awards. It has been handed out only twice before, awarded to Taylor Lautner ("Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2") in 2013 and Zac Efron ("That Awkward Moment") in 2014. Efron is back this year, nominated this time for doffing his clothes in the hit comedy "Neighbors," and he's the overwhelming favorite to repeat. -Break- Last year, we predictors weren't so convinced. We actually ranked Efron fourth with 20/1 odds, behind Jennifer Aniston ("Were the Millers"), Chris Hemsworth ("Thor: The Dark World"), and our presumed frontrunner Sam Claflin ("The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"). We had thought, perhaps, that the "Hunger Games" juggernaut would crush any support for "That Awkward Moment," but the power of Efron's fandom took us by surprise. Box Office: 'Furious 7' on Track for $150M Opening Weekend

4 April 2015 10:26 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Most franchises don't make it to movie 7 without losing some of the audience and its precious box office take, but the exact opposite is true when it comes to the Fast and Furious franchise, which continues to gain fans and grow with each new release. Yesterday saw the opening debut of Furious 7, which exceeded expectations, setting a new benchmark for the action-packed saga. The film pulled in an estimated $67.3 million on Friday (which includes Thursday previews).

Furious 7 serves as an emotional farewell for franchise mainstay Paul Walker, who passed away unexpectedly in the midst of shooting this sequel. The film pulled in $15.8 million when it screened in select theaters across the country on Thursday night, beating the previous April record holder for Thursday screenings, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That Marvel release took in an estimated $10.2 million when it opened at this time last year. Furious 7 expanded into over 4,000 theaters on Friday, »

Furious 7 Destroys Box-Office Competition

4 April 2015 8:58 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The James Wan–piloted Furious 7 destroyed its box-office competition on Thursday and Friday, pulling in a gargantuan $67.3 million gross, including $15.8 million in Thursday night showings. (That's 54 percent ahead of its predecessor's three-day gross and 26 percent of its predecessor's four-day gross.) It's also the ninth-biggest Friday opening ever, trailing only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($91 million), The Avengers ($80 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($75.7 million), Twilight: New Moon ($72.6 million), Twilight: Breaking Dawn I ($71.6 million), Breaking Dawn II ($71.1 million), Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($70.9 million), and Iron Man 3 ($68.8 million). Interestingly, Furious 7 is the only one of the aforementioned films not based on a book (or comic, as it were). Even more interestingly, Furious 7 is also the only of the aforementioned films whose opening-day gross is not the result of a massive midnight/Thursday opening. As Forbes's Scott Mendelson »

Universal’s “Furious 7″ is speeding toward a record-setting opening weekend of nearly $140 million at 4,004 U.S. locations, according to revised Friday estimates.

Furious 7″ blasted off with $58 million to $60 million on Friday — including $15.8 million in 3,069 Thursday-night showings that started at 7 p.m. in the U.S.

Recent estimates had placed the Friday-Sunday number at $115 million, which were revised upward early Friday to as much as $125 million. But Friday’s afternoon numbers — based on West Coast matinees and East Coast early evening screenings — indicated that the Easter weekend would finish between $135 million and $138 million.

The film, starring Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, will easily set a record for an April opening weekend should the estimates hold. The current April record holder, Marvel-Disney’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” opened with $95 million on the same weekend last year.

All signals now suggest that the “Furious 7″ opening »

"Insurgent," the second installment in Veronica Roth's "Divergent" trilogy, is a true middle book, and the adaptation is no exception. There's less background exposition and more plot twists and character development -- not to mention a cliffhanger ending. The movie follows Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) as they try to escape the clenches of Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and her Dauntless henchmen. On the run, Tris and Four realize they must form alliances -- with the neutral Amity, the Dauntless unwilling to follow Jeanine, and the Factionless led by the mysterious Evelyn (Naomi Watts), someone from Four's past. (In case you can't remember anything from the first movie, here are seven things to know before you see "Insurgent.")

"Insurgent" is rated PG-13 "for intense violence and action throughout, some sensuality, thematic elements and brief language." If you have an elementary-school-aged kid who read the books early, »

Tracers: Taylor Lautner Runs, Bikes, and Jumps

16 March 2015 10:25 PM, PDT | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

I'm one of those "glass half-full "critics when it comes to Taylor Lautner. Film after film I hope he'll pull a Sally Field, who went from The Flying Nun and Gidget to Sybil and Norma Rae. Would Abduction or Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 reveal the young man's inner Laurence Olivier? No, sadly. The lumbering hunk remains just a lumbering hunk in those two. Prize-winning pecs and abs plus a cute smile were what the glamor boy's fans had to settle for.

"Well, maybe Tracers will be his Wuthering Heights," I was murmuring as I scooted onto the subway last night, heading for a midtown screening room. I should have known better. I should have checked out the director's CV before hoping for the best.
