(The rest of) the Top Gun cast: Where are they now?

5 December 2011 8:00 AM, PST | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

It's rare that a movie about a hyper-macho band of hot-headed fighter pilots, with throbbing soundtrack cuts about riding a highway to the danger zone, also stretches into chick-flick territory where a Righteous Brothers ballad helps score the girl but Top Gun managed all that and picked up an Oscar.

Tony Scott's 1986 classic is still the stuff of non sequitur quotes and a thousand pop culture references - last year's Going the Distance made especially inspired use of the soundtrack - and helped push the careers of its fresh-faced stars into overdrive.

It fires into Cineplex theatres December 12 as part of the Most Wanted Mondays presentation and we thought we'd take a look at where the (rest of the) Top Gun cast has landed.

Adam Shankman in Talks to Direct 'The Nutcracker'

30 November 2011 3:16 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Jay A. Fernandez

Adam Shankman is in talks to direct the big-screen adaptation of The Nutcracker for New Line.  Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Killer) is writing the project, which Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Entertainment are producing. The film is based on the classic E.T.A. Hoffmann story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, about a girl whose Christmas toy comes alive. It inspired the perennial ballet. The UTA-repped Shankman has an adaptation of the musical Rock of Ages hitting theaters in June for New Line. He also produced Going the Distance and 17 Again for the company,

Like Crazy

Like Crazy

Directed by: Drake Doremus

Cast: Felicity Jones, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence

Running Time:

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: November 11, 2011

Plot: A British college student (Jones) falls in love with an American (Yelchin), but problems with her visa separate them and now they must try to figure out exactly what they have together.

Who’S It For? If you like your film romances with a realistic/authentic slant, that should be enough for you to enjoy this film.

Expectations: I knew nothing about this film except Yelchin was in it. While that didn’t have me sold, I have liked just about everything he’s done.

Tsr Exclusive: ‘Like Crazy’ interview with co-writer/director Drake Doremus

8 November 2011 2:52 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

With his latest film Like Crazy, Drake Doremus takes a stab at a truth that still stands regardless of how many times it is said – love is tough. Co-writing a screenplay with Ben York Jones, his fourth film (but arguable breakout) tells the story of a young couple (played by Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones) as they struggle with the many obstacles to a relationship, which include distance, fidelity, and time.

I sat down with Doremus to discuss what type of genre he thinks his film fits in to, his thoughts on the ending, what his favorite blockbuster movie is, and more.

Read Nick Allen’s scorecard review of Like Crazy (6/10)

One thing that has always interested me in films is texting, and how certain movies try to show the process of texting. Your technique was very natural.

Drake Doremus: I just wanted the audience to feel like they were there inside those texts, »

Drew Barrymore 'is Hollywood's most overpaid actor'

Drew Barrymore has been named as Hollywood's most overpaid actor. The 50 First Dates star received the dubious honour from Forbes Magazine for returning just 40 cents (25p) in box office gross for every $$1 (60p) she is paid. Barrymore's most recent film, the 2010 romantic comedy Going The Distance, grossed just $$11m (£6.8m) in ticket sales from an estimated budget of $$32m (£19.9m). Eddie Murphy finished second by making $$2.70 (£1.70) for every $$1, while last year's champion Will Ferrell came third with $$3.50 (£2.20). Reese Witherspoon and Denzel Washington (more) »

Drew Barrymore knocks Will Ferrell off top of lowest earners chart

If your name is Will Ferrell, today is a (relatively) good day. The star of The Land of the Lost and The Other Guys can no longer be tarnished with the mantle of Hollywood's least profitable star following the publication of the Forbes magazine list of the top 10 most overpaid actors.

Drew Barrymore is the new queen of excess after Forbes noted that her recent films pulled in a meagre 40 cents per $1 spent. By comparison Ferrell, who has famously topped the list for the last two years running, is now worth $3.50 per $1.

The Saturday Night Live alumnus still finds himself in third place on the list largely thanks to the box-office failure of The Land of the Lost ($70m return on a $100m budget) in 2009. Last year's The Other Guys »

Barrymore And Murphy Are Hollywood's Most Overpaid

3 November 2011 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Drew Barrymore and Eddie Murphy have been named and shamed as the most overpaid actors in Hollywood.

The Forbes.com poll suggests Barrymore's recent movies have generated a return of just $0.40 (£0.25) for every $1 (£0.63) she is paid by film studio bosses, thanks to box office flops Whip It, Everybody's Fine and last year's Going The Distance, which earned a paltry $17.8 million (£11.13 million) in U.S. ticket sales.

Dreamgirls star Murphy fared considerably better - his films returned $2.70 (£1.69) for every dollar, but it wasn't enough to save him from second place on the list as 2008's Meet Dave and 2009's Imagine That failed to attract fans to open their wallets.

But Barrymore and Murphy aren't the only stars to draw criticism - funnyman Will Ferrell and Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Denzel Washington round out the top five. »

Jason Sudeikis Joins Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis for 'Dog Fight'

24 October 2011 3:34 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Aside from being one of the better current cast members of the long-running late night sketch series "Saturday Night Live," comedian Jason Sudeikis has enjoyed some great supporting turns (ironically both with Charlie Day) in films like Horrible Bosses and Going the Distance. Now Risky Biz says the actor will reunite with "SNL" alum Will Ferrell and The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis for the new political comedy Dog Fight. Austin Powers franchise and Meet the Parents director Jay Roach is at the helm of the new film which follows rival politicians in a cutthroat election in a small congressional district in South Carolina. Originally the film said the story would follow Galifianakis and Ferrell as two candidates running in the 2012 presidential election, but that seems to have changed, unless the two politicians end up vying for the presidency and not just a congressional seat in South Carolina. The Conspirator Blu-Ray Review And Giveaway

12 September 2011 9:24 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

The Conspirator is a film that is very sure of its genre placement, and takes great pride in it. Alongside such films as Spielberg's Amistad, and Scorsese's Gangs of New York, Robert Redford's The Conspirator is a film that finds a big name in the director's chair, putting out a movie that is ultimately rather boring, and falls flat on a variety of film-making fronts. Part of the genre's creed is that the negatives are meant to be overlooked, because the film is historical, to one degree or another.

On the other hand, from the perspective of simply a tale from history with a bit of entertainment value thrown in, The Conspirator is very likely a winner. That is, serious history buffs are likely to enjoy the ride (though the special features on the Blu-Ray release are worth even more), but if you're looking for a film, you may well be disappointed. »

Weekend Box Office – The Help On Top For Third Week. The Debt Strongest of Weak Labor Day Releases

4 September 2011 10:23 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We have arrived at the official end of summer: Labor Day weekend.  Never a blockbuster in terms of grosses, this year's late summer crop of movies – two horror titles and a thriller - appears weaker than usual.  In fact, it looks like it will take four days for the newcomers to earn what last year’s Labor Day releases made in only three. Title Weekend Total 1 The Help $14,200,000 $118.6 2 The Debt $9,670,000 $11.6 3 Apollo 18 $8,700,000 $10.7 4 Shark Night 3D $8,640,000 $10.5 5 Rise of the Planet of the Apes $7,800,000 $160 6 Colombiana $7,400,000 $21.9 7 Our Idiot Brother $5,180,000 $15.4 8 Don’t be Afraid of the Dark $4,940,000 $16.3 9 Spy Kids 4 $4,630,000 $29 10 The Smurfs $4,000,000 $131.9 Labor Day 2010 was home to box office disappointments like Machete and Going the Distance.  Even so, this year’s batch of late summer hopefuls could not even rise to their very limited levels – putting this Labor Day frame on track to fall 5% behind last year’s. On its third straight weekend at number one, »
