Storyline

Fifteen year-old Emma Evans has an argument with her mother Lucy since she wants to go to a concert in London with her friends Rose and Alex. Emma immediately has a convulsion and her family takes her to the hospital, but the doctors do not find any physical problem. Then her father John tries to convince his wife to send Emma to school, instead of homeschooling, but she prefers to keep Emma in the family-based education. Lucy sends her daughter to the psychoanalyst believing that she has psychological problems and Emma asks her friend Rose to record her session of hypnosis though the cellular but the doctor dies during the session. When Emma listens to the tape, she believes she is possessed by the devil and asks her parents to be submitted to an exorcism with her uncle, Priest Christopher Taylor. However her skeptical mother is against the ritual and recalls that Chris was responsible for the death of a teenager, Ana, in the past in an unsuccessful exorcism. But when Emma levitates ... Better than 'The Rite', not quite as good as 'Emily Rose'
7 June 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

When it comes to watching devil possession films, they always get compared to The Exorcist. I think I've already mentioned that while writing my review of The Rite. Seems like Hollywood is making a ton of possession films lately. I guess it's a subject that we're all still very fascinated with.

There's nothing really new here, unfortunately. Was there ever any major concern for that, though? How many times can you make a movie about a person getting taken over by an evil entity seem fresh and new? Every movie is supposed to ask all the major questions: the who, what, why, where and how. So, when it comes to films like these, you basically already know the who, what and where. So, I watch to get the answers to the how and why. Good thing, because this one does not disappoint.

It's more raw and powerful than The Last Exorcism, mainly because that movie took a documentary-type film approach (and succeeded in it's own "fresh" take) and it makes more sense than The Rite (which relied heavily on Hopkins and some good visuals). It fits somewhere in the middle of those two, giving us it's own take on that mean ol' Lucifer and his reasoning for taking over poor, innocent Emma Evans (Sophie Vavasseur in a very convincing performance).

Not a whole lot of frights (although I did jump once) are here and that's refreshing to see in this type of movie -- too many Hollywood pictures are giving us the old clichés of cats who pop out of weird places, people who sneak up on people and tap them on the shoulder, etc etc -- we get it, we get it... you don't know how to write. Nope, it's all about the story here... and it's a good one. I think they revealed the twist a little too early, though... it would have been nice to get that news nearer the end of the film. All in all, though, I do recommend it if you like these types of movies. See more reviews at www.soveryterry.com Final Grade: B
