Apple Gets Two-Week Exclusive to ‘Trip to Italy’ as iTunes Becomes More Valuable to Indie Filmmakers

11 December 2014 3:38 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After establishing itself as a lucrative platform for independent filmmakers, Apple’s iTunes is starting to get more access to their movies. The company started offering IFC Films’ “The Trip to Italy” earlier this week exclusively for two weeks before the Steve Coogan comedy is released on other digital platforms.

Should the film sell well, iTunes is likely to start getting even more exclusives from other independent distributors — which should prove especially beneficial to Apple as it faces increased competition from Amazon, Netflix, Walmart’s Vudu and VOD platforms run by cable and satellite operators. All are looking to tout exclusive titles to their customers as a way to attract more consumers and boost revenue.

IFC Films very much appreciates and values our continued working relationship with iTunes,” said IFC’s executive VP of business development, Lisa Schwartz. “‘The Trip to Italy’ was a successful theatrical release for IFC Films, »

Benedict Cumberbatch Holds Onto His Identity Amid Awards Season Crush

10 December 2014 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Benedict Cumberbatch is concerned that the world might be growing tired of him. Though the actor, who shot to fame as the titular character on the BBC series “Sherlock,” has long had a rabid and vocal fanbase, he is rapidly emerging as a leading man. His star turn in last year’s “The Fifth Estate” badly stumbled, but he more than compensated with wildly different roles in “August: Osage County” and “12 Years a Slave.” And now he’s tipped for his first Oscar nomination, playing World War II codebreaker Alan Turing in the just-released drama “The Imitation Game.”

Cumberbatch, making a brief stop in Los Angeles from the U.K. set of BBC miniseries “The Hollow Crown: Richard III” to do some press for “Imitation Game,” is enjoying the attention, despite his uneasiness about being overexposed. “The more work you do, the more publicity you have to do,” he says. »

SAG Award Nominations Analysis: Aniston, Gyllenhaal Boosted, ‘Selma’ Shut Out

10 December 2014 7:16 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It was a good morning for Jennifer Aniston and Jake Gyllenhaal, whose heralded performances in smaller films managed to break into crowded fields with nominations for the SAG Awards. Not doing as well today is Paramount, which found both their Oscar hopefuls, “Interstellar” and “Selma,” shut out of all categories.

With the SAG the first of the guilds to announce nominations for motion pictures, the SAG Awards are often seen as a great harbinger for the Academy Awards. Last year, all four SAG Award winners in film went on to Oscar glory. While there is no correlation between the SAG Awards’ best ensemble category and Oscar’s best picture, many continue to insist a connection exists. Last year, only three of the five film ensembles nominated went on to score best picture noms at the Oscars, with “August: Osage County” and “Lee DanielsThe Butler” left off the Academy list. »

Foreign Actors Forge Global Careers After Film Breakthroughs

4 December 2014 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As any seasoned observer of the annual award circuit knows, the campaign trail for performers in foreign-language films is significantly rockier than it is for the rest. Of the 200 performances that secured an Oscar nomination in the past decade, a grand total of five are featured in films that aren’t principally in English. Even established crossover names have trouble gaining awards traction for subtitled fare: Witness Marion Cotillard, a rare foreign-language Oscar winner for “La Vie en Rose,” trailing this year’s perceived lead actress front-runners despite universal acclaim for her performance in “Two Days, One Night.”

For international newcomers, then, it’s that much harder to achieve such recognition — it’s been 10 long years since Colombian first-timer Catalina Sandino Moreno landed alongside Hilary Swank and Kate Winslet in the lead actress Oscar race for her sterling work in helmer-scribe Joshua Marston’s “Maria Full of Grace.”

Meryl Streep Lands Oscar Noms, but How Do Her Films Stack Up?

4 December 2014 9:03 AM, PST | Scott Feinberg | See recent Scott Feinberg news »

By Anjelica Oswald

Managing Editor

Meryl Streep holds the record for the most Oscar acting nominations with 18 — Jack Nicholson and Katherine Hepburn are tied for second with 12 each — and could potentially break her own record with a 19th nomination for Disney’s adaptation of Into the Woods. The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg said Streep “steals every scene in which she appears as The Witch.”

Though Streep hasn’t gone more than five years without landing an Oscar nomination since 1979 — the longest break was between 1990’s Postcards from the Edge and 1995’s The Bridges of Madison County — her movies haven’t fared the same. Three of her 18 films scored best picture nominations, all of which won, while four of the films were nominated solely for her performance.

Streep scored her first Oscar nomination in 1979 for her supporting role in The Deer Hunter (1978), which was only her second feature film. The film won five Oscars, »
