The best adaption we'll ever get to see
7 March 2009 | by (Brazil) – See all my reviews

Upon hearing about this series of animations, I thought it would be mildly entertaining to watch before the live-action film. However, having watched both, I can say this series conveys far more of the graphic novel's soul than the live-action adaptation.

Through the course of 12 episodes, each about 30 minutes long, almost every panel from the graphic novel is seamlessly animated, leaving very little out, with only a few scenes suffering a few trims in the dialogue. Due to the length of the series as a whole, the pace doesn't feel like it had to be rushed, like I felt it was in Snyder's adaptation.

The presentation as a whole is fantastic. The animation is amazing, and the fact you're actually watching Dave Gibbons' drawings come to life adds to the experience, especially if you've read the graphic novel. The narrator is astonishingly good, and does a spectacular job of adding emotion to the character's lines. I thought Nite Owl and Dr. Manhattan's voices especially suited the characters. Even so, I feel that there should have a woman performing the voice work for the female characters, seeing as how it feels somewhat odd at first to hear the narrator doing the female voices, although he does a good job with them as well.

I'd recommend this for fans of the graphic novel, mostly, since I think that watching this series isn't as fulfilling as reading the original work, but I suppose this is nice is you're not really into the whole comic book format. I'd also say that fans of the comic who felt let down by the live-action version should check this out.

Overall, it's a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel and has plenty of merit on its own.
