Classic Action Stars: Who truly is the best?

26 September 2016 2:01 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

With Jean-Claude Van Damme hitting the big screen this month in Kickboxer: Vengeance (a remake of his 1989 smash hit) we decided to find out who is the greatest of the legendary Eighties action heroes. Who kicked hardest, fought longest and has the staying power to be the last man standing? Let the fight begin!

Sylvester Stallone

Evidence: Sylvester Stallone is not only an enduring action star of note – from Rambo and Rocky, Cobra to Cliffhanger, right through to The Expendables, Sly has always set the box office cash tills ringing; but he is also an Oscar-nominated writer, a director, and even a painter. There is, it seems, very little he cannot do.

Verdict: Stallone is more rennaisance man than action hero king.

Dolph Lundgren

Evidence: At 6ft 5 and built like a Sherman tank, Swedish powerhouse Lundgren has taken on James Bond and Rocky, played The Punisher, a Universal Soldier and was one of The Expendables. »

Mechanic: Resurrection Review

27 August 2016 11:45 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Since his breakout role as a modern action icon in The Transporter, Jason Statham has played similarly steely-eyed badasses time and again, including in franchises like The Expendables and The Fast and the Furious. Given Statham’s real-life martial arts skill, rugged good looks and undeniable charisma, it’s no wonder that every studio in Hollywood is dying to build an ongoing series of films around the international superstar. However, as is known to happen in the business, this thirst for long-term profits can often result in films that are so devoid of purpose or substance that they may as well not exist at all.

Take The Mechanic, for example. The 2011 film – itself a remake of a 1972 release starring Charles Bronson (Death Wish) – made just $29 million domestically against a production budget of $40 million, but its $62 million worldwide cume was apparently strong enough for Summit Entertainment to eventually develop a sequel. »

Jean-Claude Van Johnson pilot review

Louisa Mellor Aug 23, 2016

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a fictionalised version of himself in this action movie spoof Amazon comedy pilot…

Like a supermodel launching a make-up line or an athlete turning coach, playing a parody version of yourself is one way for past-their-prime movie stars to keep the cheques coming. Jean-Claude Van Damme’s TV roles so far have exclusively been as him - on Friends in 1996, on Las Vegas in 2004, on Robot Chicken in 2009 and in double denim and a mullet wig for Coors Light since 2012. Now he’s playing himself in Amazon comedy pilot Jean-Claude Van Johnson, an action-movie spoof from The Expendables writer Dave Callaham.

More properly, he plays a fictionalised Jean-Claude Van Damme, not only a former action movie star but also a former undercover operative, part of a Hollywood network that uses movie-making as a front for covert black ops. (Should Amazon pick it up to series, »

Stallone Denies Any Involvement in Female Expendables Spinoff

14 July 2016 6:18 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Way back in February 2014, we reported that director Robert Luketic had come aboard to direct an all-female Expendables spinoff entitled ExpendaBelles, but that was the last we had heard about the project. That report revealed that The Expendables star Sylvester Stallone will produce this action-thriller alongside Kevin King Templeton, but it seems that isn't the case anymore. Sylvester Stallone recently clarified that he has no involvement whatsoever in this project.

The actor reportedly reached out to Deadline to clear up "erroneous reports" that he is involved with the project, telling the site that he isn't participating in the film in any way. While we haven't reported on this project since Robert Luketic took over as director, Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables co-star Randy Couture recently teased in an interview with New York Daily News that this ExpendaBelles movie may move forward ahead of The Expendables 4. While it remains to be seen whether he will take part in any more installments of The Expendables action franchise, Sylvester Stallone has tired of erroneous media reports cropping up around the world that he is in the center of The Expendabelles, a spinoff film that will team a group of female operatives. Mickey Rourke’s Face

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City (2005) is playing on Mubi June 18 - July 17, 2016 in the United States. Sin CityWhat happens when a performer’s face changes? This very question animated a bewildering piece by Owen Gleiberman last month in Variety, wherein Gleiberman—a man—pondered whether Renée Zellweger’s slightly aged, maybe plastic surgery-tinkered visage made her an entirely different performer. He sustained this mediation on the basis of a whopping three-minute trailer for Bridget Jones’ sBaby, hoarily declaring his good intentions to combat Hollywood’s sexist machinations at his piece’s onset. Yet, in spite of this pretense, his approach exhibited an astonishing lack of stringency, ultimately scrutinizing Zellweger along the same sexist lines he claimed to bemoan. Like others, I find this storied practice of male critics inspecting women’s faces pretty odious. If male critics have gotten craftier than such forefathers as John Simon (who, »

Mechanic: Resurrection Trailer Has Statham on a Mission to Kill

23 June 2016 1:35 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in 2011, Jason Statham starred in the action remake The Mechanic, based on a 1970s Charles Bronson classic. The remake didn't exactly set the box office on fire, earning just $29.1 million domestically and $62 million worldwide, from a $40 million budget. Now that the franchise has shifted to Lionsgate, the studio is pulling out all the stops with the action-packed sequel Mechanic: Resurrection, which you can see in the first trailer.

Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) returns as the Mechanic in the sequel to the 2011 action thriller. When the deceitful actions of a cunning but beautiful woman (Jessica Alba) force him to return to the life he left behind, Bishop's life is once again in danger as he has to complete an impossible list of assassinations of the most dangerous men in the world, or he faces being executed himself. The movie was shot on location in Bangkok, Thailand.
